If you want her to honor the contract, you must as well.

We employ a part-time nanny on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There are many Monday holidays so it is in our contract that she only get major holidays off inlcuding Labor Day and Memorial Day but not President's Day. My husband and I both work on President's Day.

It's fine to ask and it's fine if she says no.

Don't bother with a bribe like some PPs have suggested. It won't work and will just lead you down a bad road.

Simply ask and have a backup plan.

with my first nanny I gave her all fed days off paid but my empoloyer expected me to work on a couple. So this time I put minor holidays as working days and if we all get them off, great bonus paid day off.

MB here. Are you looking at this as a way for her to make up the hours she didn't work on the snow days? Is that because you need to make up hours you didn't get to work on those days? I think it is fine to have a policy that snow days either count against PTO or must be made up because that's the way your job works, but she should have some say in when the hours are made up. Also, this should really be discussed and documented in advance as part of a snow policy.

I think it's fine to ask but maybe offer her something in return -- an extra vacation day down the line, some extra pay for that day, etc. -- and be perfectly accepting if she declines. She has planned on having that day off and she shouldn't have to work unless she wants to do you a favor

So you want her to work on a holiday that she had off just because it snowed a lot this year? Lady, the snow days are out of her control. If she usually has this day off, do you? What is the need for her to come in? If it's just to make up days, you are way out if line and I am sure she resents you.

It is fine of them to ask. It is only wrong if they pressure you or get mad if you say no. Otherwise I don't see why it would be wrong to ask.

+1 Nothing wrong with asking.

Yeah but pay her time and a half. She will most likely resent it if you dont.

I think you could ask if you legitimately need to work to make up time. And of course, she could decline. If it's just to get the time back, I wouldn't even ask.

Agreed. your contract provides her with the holiday off, snow days epecially those because of dangerous weather are just part of hiring an employee. Unless you have a specific snow day policy in your contract, you cannot force her to make up time on your whim.

Our nanny always has President's Day off as a Federal holiday (paid) but this year, I asked her to work. Is this okay? We have agreed that she follows school closings during bad weather so she has also had a lot of snow days that we also pay her for.
