That's ridiculous. Paying the appropriate taxes and fees doesn't add a significant cost. I pay on the books btw.

Nannies allow this by not reporting them to the bodies of oversight for their profession and by taking the job.

Lawyers should be reported to the bar in their practicing states for this, cpa's to the body that certifies them.

No nanny can complain about not being ble to find an on the books job while not speaking up about other issues!!

I was once looking for a room to rent and reported an unlicensed home daycare. I stand by what I say- make the difference you want to see happen.

Unless you are desperate, I'd keep looking. My husband's an accountant and we insist on making sure everything's legal and all taxes are paid. It's in the nanny's best interest for this to be done. My husband's also an ethical guy. He's not gonna preach one thing to his tax clients and then do something else himself. I'd be worried that if the family wants to pay you off the books, they may be less than honest in other aspects of their lives.

+1

I know of 2 lawyers who pay their nannies off the books. Their choice, not the nanny's.

I'm usually super against paying under the table but if you're legitimately in need of any job that you can get then take it but continue to search for a new family. Paying on the books is not an option - they are choosing to hire an employee - they need to be responsible employers.

I wouldn't accept a job that pays under the table

She would probably be fired if you claimed taxes at the end of the year that she refused to pay. I don't think it's odd since accountants have a bad rep for being shady lol

So I am interviewing with a family and they wanted to pay off the books, so I agreed even though it's not my preference (I am desperate for a job right now). But then I find out the MB is an accountant, is that weird or what? Wouldn't she be expected to pay on the books? I mean that's like her job. What do you think?
