It's definitely illegal at the very least.

Since you speak Arabic, I would reach out to people in your community and find a nanny that way. Many refugees are arriving from Syria now, most of them do not speak English yet so their career opportunities are limited. I am sure you can find someone who has significant childcare experience.

I have hired a nanny who is "fresh off the boat", doesn't speak English and doesn't drive and we pay her $10 per hour+food, no other benefits. She does light housekeeping and childcare for one baby.

If you hire an "Americanized" nanny expect to pay a minimum of $15 per hour if no housekeeping tasks are involved. I do not recommend outsourcing cleaning to a nanny because she will not be able to concentrate on your baby while she is cleaning your house for hours.

Your are providing good benefits so you should be able to attract good candidates. Good luck!

Immigrant ones are definitely paid a lot less. I have a cheap colleague who pays her immigrant nanny $6 an hour and also makes her do laundry and make dinner.

$16/hr for our nanny in NW DC. No cleaning except baby-related items as well as baby meal prep for 1.5 yr. old. You want them to focus on childcare, not house cleaning. A good nanny should be able to find your child playdates and be active with them, not feel pressured to let them cry in their crib because they have to clean the house.
We also have bi-weekly cleaning and it's plenty in our case..

Live out...She is a refugee so she gets subsidized housing from the government.

PP,

Is that $10/hour for a live in or live out?

Immigrant nannies who do not speak English have significantly lower rates than English speaking nannies.

For an inexperienced Nanny/Housekeeper who speaks Arabic:

Live-In: $600 a week
Live-Out:$750 a week

More if you need them to drive and have a college degree.

I am beginning my search for a nanny and I was wondering what a fair rate would be. We would prefer someone who speaks Arabic as their first language since we are Arabic speakers ourselves and want to raise DS bilingual, so an immigrant nanny would be ideal. We would offer 10 paid federal holidays, 5 days paid sick leave, 7 days paid vacation leave of nanny's choice, and 10 days paid vacation leave our choice. She would be allowed to carry over her sick leave every year but not her vacation leave. We would also pay for her healthcare and pay her $100 for a metrocard once a month (or fill up her with gas every two weeks if she drives). She does not have to have experience being a nanny but she has to have experience taking care of children. She would have full access to whatever is in our kitchen. If she is a live in, she would have her own room, with a tv and an en suite bathroom. We would expect her to work 40-45 hours a week from Monday to Thursday. DS would be four months old at the time. We have no other children.

What do you think a fair weekly rate would be for a live in or live out? Also how would that rate change if we want her to do housekeeping duties (we currently have a bi-weekly housecleaning service and would drop them if the nanny we hire agrees to perform housekeeping duties. Our home is 2300 square feet.
