Tell her to leave receipts in the future.

DB leaves some cash and refills it when it gets low. I log expenses along with miles driven.

Easy peasy.

Monday - zoo - $30
Tuesday - playdate at Larla's, story time at library
Wednesday - aquarium - $45

Monday mornings I leave an envelope that says "Petty Cash" with enough cash for everything he's written out (I round up to the nearest $10 and then add an extra $20 for anything that crops up), plus money for any errands I need him to do (pick up drycleaning, diapers, etc.). It goes in our junk drawer in the kitchen. There is a change jar in the cabinet above that drawer.

Each morning he takes however much money he needs for the day, and before he leaves at the end of each day he leaves the receipts from everything he spent money on. All dollar-change goes back in the envelope, and all coin-change goes in the change jar.

Ask her for your change and the receipt tomorrow morning. Tell her that in the future, to please always do that before she leaves at the end of the day.

I like your system. Well done.

We have a low limit credit card in our Nanny's name. She uses it for outings, etc. She gives us receipts for tax purposes. So much easier for us than dealing with petty cash....

Cash is left in an envelope. Change and receipts go back in the envelope.

We had a place for petty cash and I always put all the money I did not use along with the receipts back in the envelope. I don't know if MB ever went through the receipts, but I always put them in there.

Def ask for receipts. She'll start spending the petty cash on nonsense instead of taking your child to fun activities/eating out. Just tell her to leave receipts so you can figure out when to leave more.

My MB gives me $20 at a time for incidentals and I ask for more when I run out. I do leave receipts even though she's said I don't need to and probably doesn't even read them. I tell her in advance (week of if possible, morning of if it's a last minute opportunity/change in plans) if we need more money for anything and/or the bus pass for transportation. Works for us - I know I always have money in my wallet (their money) to pick up milk or wipes or tissues but don't have to feel responsible for a large amount of cash at once.

I'm an MB. We reimburse our nanny monthly for any expenditures (she'll often pick up some groceries, or take the kids to a bounce house or something). She keeps the receipts and gives them to me all at once. I also keep the receipts just in case we ever needed to document for tax purposes that these amounts were expense reimbursement and not some under the table compensation.

We also keep an envelope w/ some petty cash just in case she (or we) need some cash in a pinch. I don't really worry about receipts for that but she tends to give them to us anyway - she's pretty scrupulous about that stuff (which I really appreciate).

I'm a nanny - my family usually leaves 50-100 bucks in an envelope in the junk cabinet and refills as needed. Nearly all our activities are free but I use it when they ask me to pick up milk or supplies or something, and occasionally to buy my charge lunch on our way home if I don't feel like cooking. They never mentioned receipts and I used to leave them in the envelope but don't bother any more - I know they trust me and I am very careful to keep their money separate from mine. I put all change back in the change jar in the same cabinet, and put bills back in the envelope at the end of the day.

I would just put a small jar with some coins in it in a designated spot, and an envelope or something. Tell nanny "if we ever leave you money for errands or outings, you can leave the change in this jar and the bills and receipts in this envelope."

its really up to you. As a nanny I would definitely leave the receipt. Especially if it was the first time. However every "nanny relationship" is different. With my current job I just use the $$ from the petty jar and usually throw the change in my own wallet as long as its coin. Any paper money goes back to mb. However I do pick up colouring books, crayons, dollar store treats, take the kids for ice-cream all on my own dime.

I had another job where once a month the MB would give me 150 on a cheque. I kept track and when i was out she would give me more. She really trusted me.

What ever works best for you

Brand new MB here.
How does everyone handle petty cash? Today I left some petty cash with which the nanny went and bought paper towels, etc. I assumed she would leave the receipt where I left the money but neither the change nor the receipt were there. I do t care so much about change because I assume she'll use it again for incidental expenses. Do you all ask for and keep track of receipts, or does that introduce a level mistrust? She just started.
I'm new to this and none of my friends have nannies so I really have no clue how to balance accountability and trust.
