I'm a nanny and I use my own 2000 jetta, the parents have a truck and an SUV I could use but I'm more comfortable with my own car and they don't seem to mind.. Not to mention I'd rather the kids make a mess in my own car than their shiny expensive ones.

We bought a Honda Odyssey as the "kid car." We also have 3 in carseats, two still rearfacing so that eliminated a lot of cars and the option for the nanny to use her car.

I wish we had done this from the beginning when we had 1 kid. I don't worry about maintenance, or whether the carseats have been removed and reinstalled properly (if nanny needs her backseat, for example), and we bought a car we felt was safe.

I also don't worry about the kids doing damage to the nanny's car, or those "grey incidents" where maybe a kid, or a kid's activity led indirectly to damage, but the driver really should have been more careful. Now it's all our car, so we decide if a scratch or dirty carpet is worth fixing or not.

I drive my 2007 hyundai accent and I upped my insurance since I drive the children I watch.

In the past I've usually driven older but well maintained 4 door sedans owned by the family with me added to their insurance as a primary driver of the vehicle.

We gave our nanny our old 2004 Odyssey (very good condition with fewer than 70k miles) and bought ourselves a new odyssey. 3 kids, so minivan is kind of most reasonable option. Still remember the conversation at the dinner table on weather there is an option for us not to have 2 minivans, but could not come up with one. Our nanny doesn't have her cars though, so she drives our van to her house and back.

You ask the nanny which car she feels safer in, and can drive better.

Give her the car that is the most reliable, uses the least amount of gas, and is the easiest to get the kids in and out of.

If all of your cars have these qualities, have a conversation with your nanny about it. Perhaps she is not comfortable driving large cars, perhaps she would rather not drive an expensive car, perhaps she is used to driving one make over the other....the possibilities are endless and her input would be very valuable.

My current family bought a minivan specifically for me drive the kids in so I drive that. Every other job, I have normally driven my own car (2010 Mazda CX-7).

I drive my own car when I nanny. 2013 Nissan Juke. It works.

I'm a nanny who uses her own car for work. Right now it's a 2013 Ford Fusion. Very safe and reliable, which are very important to me and of course my employers.

What did your insurance agent recommend to you?

When I had positions where I drove the kids, I drive a 2003 Subaru Forester (in 2011 and 2012) and a 2001 Saab sedan in 2013. not sure which model. I've had a few occasional gigs where I've used my own car, a 2000 accord coupe and the 2 doors are a pain for kids in car seats but not unmanageable.

We will need our nanny to start driving our children to school/activities soon and can't decide what kind of car she should have. We were thinking a used reliable car, but then wonder if we should instead give her one of our newish very safe cars instead. What do you use?
