It's not un-PC. We interviewed candidates from all over the world (including the US) and told everyone the same thing: we will be paying taxes/withholding and would need to see legal documentation that they can work in the US. We had a few applicants who are here legally but are on student visas, and therefore not necessarily allowed to work.
Agree with PP, print out the I9. I never asked anyone for documents until we were offering the job, but it helped that I had some knowledge beforehand of what I would need to see.

You simply state that you will be paying on the books, and that she will need to provide proof of eligibility to work. Are you planning to hire her? I do not submit to background checks, or submit any forms or documentation until an employer has made their intention to hire me clear.

Sorry if I'm not being PC...I have never hired a nanny before and am just wondering if there is any "Standard Protocol".
How do you run a background check if you don't go through care.com etc? She was referred to me by a friend of a friend.
