I hate that too. I make $55k/year NET which at 25, is great and allows me to not have to worry about how much I spend, how I'm going to pay bills, etc.

How about cash and a gift card to her favorite store (the gift card would be kind of like also buying a "present" in addition to the cash)

I am in the minority here, but I would prefer a gift.

I have a salary that pays my bills and work hard to make sure that my incoming cash is more than my outgoing. Any extra cash from overtime or babysitting (from other families) I usually put into savings, or save up for more expensive purchases like a new washer and dryer, or a vacation I want to take etc.

So for me it would be nice to get something that I normally wouldn't spend the money on. That being said, my mb knows how to access my public wishlist on amazon and only buys me gifts off of there, so they are all things I want. I wouldn't find use for a 200 coach bag. However the 200 kindle fire on my list would be appreciated.

Gift card. Never owned nor care to own a $200 purse.

Stop being greedy. She's looking for advice here.

Presumably you know if your nanny is hard up at the moment or not, or have an inkling at least. If you reckon she's having trouble with paying her rent, give her cash. If you reckon she's doing well (and I agree, not all nannies are poor. I have always been very well compensated, and so have most of the people I know who work as nannies) get her something nice you know she'll like. Like, if she has specifically mentioned the exact bag she set her eyes on - with an expensive gift like that, you don't want to give her something she's not going to absolutely love.

But personally, I'd prefer cash and something small (like, put the cash in a nice mug or something along those lines). I've been given very generous gifts a few time, and it was always a bit awkward. Cash is easier to accept, I think, because once you have it it's yours to do whatever you please. A gift always stays 'oh this super expensive mag my nanny family gave me'.

So I think if you want to spend a certain amount of money on a gift to your nanny, don't spend it on something big, and instead give her cash and something small and personal.

For me, $$$ is much preferred over an expensive gift.

$$ + a cheap but thoughtful gift is even better, though.

Cash please! Coach bags won't pay my rent.

Cash really IS king. A poor person doesn't need a Coach bag, even if they've been noticing it and thinking they want it. They want food more, even if they can't prioritize that.

if it was a purse I'd specifically mentioned liking, I'd probably rather havethat because even if given the cash I couldn't justify spending that much on a purse. if I were flat broke and needed groceries, I'd rather have the cash.

Mb here.

I'm reading all these posts regarding Christmas bonus and birthdays.... And our nanny is going to be celebrating a birthday soon.

We just gave cash bonus for Christmas, No supplemental presents, no gifts, because though we could buy them a coach bag or whatever, nanny pay isn't that much- wouldn't you just rather have the money to spend on whatever you want, rather than being stuck with a $200 purse? The money we could've spent on getting a supplemental gift, we just added on to give more cash.

What do the nannies think
