OP, I'd give her in hand a draft of your ref letter, as you give her the news. It'll soften the blow, if she's not expecting it. Ask her to let you know within a week, if there's anything additional she'd like you to include.
Knowing how my work has been valued, means the world to me.
Also, I'm sure she'd love the opportunity to see your children at least once a month, if possible. Maybe even once a week in the beginning, so the separation is more gradual.
What do you think?

Under normal business circustances, I'd agree. However, most MBs can't learn enough details about a potential caregiver of their child. (Not to mention the fact that she was a lobbiest.)

Absolutely, OP, a month's notice and severance is exactly right. I'm sure she'll be sorry to move on, it sounds like you all have built a great relationship.

Subject: Saying goodbye to our long time nanny - how?
After four wonderful years, the time has come for us to say goodbye to our nanny. Our needs have changed, as have hers, and though it breaks our heart to do it, we know we'll need to have The Talk with her next month.
We wanted to wait until after the holidays (of course!) and gave her her standard holiday bonus (two weeks' salary, plus a small gift for her and gifts for her grandkids) this past week. We were thinking of giving her one month's severance pay and notice and telling her shortly after the new year.
Does this sound like a reasonable amount of time and pay? We would of course be working every connection we have to find her another family who will treasure her as we have.
