OP, I'd give her in hand a draft of your ref letter, as you give her the news. It'll soften the blow, if she's not expecting it. Ask her to let you know within a week, if there's anything additional she'd like you to include.
Knowing how my work has been valued, means the world to me.
Also, I'm sure she'd love the opportunity to see your children at least once a month, if possible. Maybe even once a week in the beginning, so the separation is more gradual.
