I wonder if all these nannies will be such obnoxious know-it-alls when they have their own kids?

Didn't read all the post. I potty trained my charge twice. For 2 months everything was good. Then mb puts a potty chart up for her. I looked so confused! I said doesn't DD go on the potty for you? She doesn't wear pull-ups for me at all and never had accidents. ( until yesterday in her snow suit!!!!)
She seemed so surprised and said she won't pee in the pity for me at all! Goodness

have you considered that your MB/DB may be considering your convenience and not having to clean your car or you having a child pee on your shoes or lap in making this decision about a pull up.

I am the OP. I posted this because I am a nanny to a VERY excelled 2.5 year old. When I first became her nanny she was 1.5, very excelled then too, & was ready for potty training..but her senile parents would sit her on the potty,hear her say "I don't like potty" & allow her to get up. I AUTOMATICALLY begin enforcing her to sit on the potty. A week after her 2nd birthday she was & still is potty trained.

HOWEVER..she sleeps with her parents. So if she has to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night or during nap time, they'll leave a pull up on her...if she wakes up & says she has to go they'll tell her go in her Pull Up because they are too darn lazy to get up so she can get to her potty. She asks for permission to use the potty when I'm around and that makes me CRINGE!!! I tell her never ask if you can go to the potty when I'm around..just go! She also wakes up during nap time to go..so I know she's capable of not needing a Pull up during sleep.

Her parents just keep buying the darn Pull Ups. They also refer to them as diapers which also pisses me off.

If a child can initiate using the potty by themselves they aren't potty trained.

And some of you guys are judgmental pricks, especially the comments about pull ups at night. Night training is a biological milestone and has nothing to do with being potty trained, jackasses.

Does s/he not have a sign to let you know? A way to answer yes/no about using the bathroom? If they literally cannot communicate their bathroom needs, I agree with the PP that they aren't "potty trained," although I would have serious questions about much bigger issues at that point...

We never had the child use a sign since potty training went so well. At 15 months almost completely done. But like I said I did worry about going out in public and put a diaper on even when the child was completely potty trained. Just my own fears accidents happening in unfamiliar environments. Thankfully now no problems as now the child is older and can tell me.

I know an 8 year old that still needs pull ups for sleep because she doesn't wake up in the middle of the night if she has to go. Sometimes she will ask to try to go without one for the night, when that happens her mom supportively allows it, even though it inevitably leaves her with wet sheets in the morning. Some kids take awhile.

And as for night time bed wetting that is a whole different matter and not a "potty training" issue. it takes some kids many years to deal with this and many because they sleep heavily and just do not want to get up at night. It can be way more impactful on the child and the family if they are up every night changing all the sheets.

If a child is ready to give up their night time pull up then great but pressuring them to do it because the nanny or some other adult in their life is embarrassed for them, that is not fair on the child and definitely not something any pediatrician would recommend these days.

but go ahead and slam the parents for this behavior because thats what happens on this board. No-one is an expert on how to deal with every child.

I didn't know this.

I cannot imagine putting a pull up on an older child.

My sister has an older child who is 11 and wears a pull up at night still. He doesn't want to go to any overnight camps with his school because he doesn't want anyone to know he wears pull ups still. So sad....

Like come on!! You're confusing the child. One day they're in underwear next day they're in a pull up, I'm confused as to why parents do this? PULL UP SHOULD ONLY BE FOR NAP/BEDTIME & TRAVEL!! THATS ALL
