Agreed. It's very hard for a child to adjust from being home all day to going to a new, strange place all day. Placing the child in only a few days a week will fare better for both child and parent.

If you are going to be paying a nanny I agree with other PP's just to do a morning preschool. If the nanny is only there for an hour before school and a couple of hours after school she is really more of a babysitter at that point and not a nanny. You are going to have a hard time finding someone who wants this schedule.

PP's, the OP didn't ask for you to critique her choice on how to spend her money.

Let's stay on topic.

Op, I think that you should ask the nanny what she would be comfortable doing. Perhaps present a list and ask her to tell you what she would want to do.

If your DC will be in school 8.30-3, what hours will you need the nanny?
Typically, in this situation, I would guess that parents adjust their schedule so someone is able to drop DC off at preschool and only hire a part time nanny.

Your child should be in a 2 or 3 half day program. 2.5 is too young for a full day program. And if they have the child napping in the afternoon, wouldn't it be better to do that at home?

PP gave good suggestions. It really depends on the candidate and what you discuss during the interviews. For example, I love cooking and baking. If I had a situation like that, I'd enjoy meal planning, preparation, and cooking.
I'd also be willing to run errands such as dry cleaning, or grocery store runs.

I'm surprised your preschool program is m-f, 8.30-3pm. Or maybe your definition of toddler is different than what I'm picturing. Are none of the programs mornings only? Or only a few days per week?

sounds like he's in daycare

This is what I do with "free" time:

- kid's laundry
- straighten up the house
- vacuum, mop, dust
- organize (children's closet, art supplies, play area, etc)
- empty trash and recycling
- check on the pet's food & water
-bake something for the kiddos
- peruse DCUM

I like to keep busy. Most of this is not required of me, but I hate being idle.

I'd like to hire a full time nanny to help with my toddler who will go to preschool next year. Will need help getting ready for and taking to school and dropping off and picking up and watching til we get home from work. Would like to hire now so my child bonds with her (and we want to bond with the person we are going to trust to drive our child to school.) Hours of school, depending on which we get into will be something like m-f 8:30-3:00. In this situation what do most families have the nanny do when the kid is in school? Trying to justify the cost when there are many hours without kid duties.

Thanks!
