Mid-forties MB here with a nanny who is about 13 years older than me.

Age differences or similarities will happen - it's all in how you react to them and what makes you feel most comfortable. It can be awkward from the employer's perspective also, but if you and the parents get along and have good communication it hopefully won't matter in the long run.

Two years younger is about the same age...unless you are 12.

It has nothing to do with my position, if anything my position is a wonderful way to make money while also having children. I just haven't met the right person to start a family with. I'm also paid enough to own a condo alone and have no debt. I want to spend all my time with my future children without completely depending on my husband to support me. This isn't about growing up and choosing a job that is socially acceptable to someone else. I have a nice quality of life which is way more important than having what the smiths think I should have.

Our nanny is 6 years younger than us. I'd rather have someone younger than me than older.

I know! This is what I love to do. Who says I need to change it? Besides, I have many friends that are jealous of what I make per hour and that I don't have to be working in an office or in an easier going position (sales) that pays so much less. They think it is the perfect balance of good pay and more easy going with the type of work.

I am in my mid-40's and prefer working for families who are at least in their 30's. This is my preference due to some bad experiences.

I worked for a few families with parents in their mid- to late-20's and always had issues such as late payments, incomplete payments and communication issues.

Older families to me tend to have their acts more together and know more what they are doing. Plus they tend to be more mature overall.

OP here. This is how I feel as well. I am also 27.

My last two employers have been 3 years older than me (I'm 27). It's nice to have someone to relate to but has been a tad bit depressing at the same because they are living the life I wish I could. It's easy when your younger and your employes seem way older but once that gap closes and you realize it will take you much longer to get where they are, not so great anymore.

I also have worked for older bosses, 15-25 years older. For the first time I'm working for bosses around the same age, early 30's. It is awesome! We were raised in the same era. Understand the same pop culture, and know the same music.

It creates a great even child raring environment.

Nanny here. I've always worked for parents older than me. I am in my 20s. I might have an interview with an MB who I believe is the same age as me. Is that weird? I can't imagine working for parents younger than me, but I guess it's inevitable if I stay on the nanny path... Just something I never thought about!
