Teachers and others with these types of benefits also have degrees, certifications and have to pass tests in order to be able to do their jobs. Nannies do not. Literally anyone can -attempt at least- to be a nanny.
And yes, nannies have hourly wages, they also have overtime in most cases, PTO, paid vacations, flexible schedules, bonuses and no supervision. So yeah, I'd say nannying has some benefits too.

I'm the OP. Thanks to the PP. I think we are going to just set a budget, write a detailed position description, and see where that takes us. It seems like there are some nannies on the board that are driving the crazy discussion about pay scales. I'm going to reach out to other mom's as well in the area. Thank you again for your normal comment.

Hi OP.

Your rate is just fine for the area. You even have someone on this thread interested in your job! You will have many great candidates to choose from.

$14.54 is a hell of a lot more than you can make in fields that require education, certification, lisencing, regulation and relevant background. Nannying requires none of that, yet you expect to make more than a first year teacher with a degree? You women have some very over inflated senses of self worth. It is child care, not rocket science, and should pay accordingly. This is just becoming a joke.

Please don't feed the troll, folks.

OP, you'll never get a good answer to your question from DCUM. I would talk to people you actually know in your area. I'd say average is $15-$20/hr but I'm sure there are others here who would disagree.

Part of this depends on what you want in a nanny - college educated? native speaker of english? bilingual? driver? 5+ years experience? additional non-nannying work experience (e.g. nursing, teaching)?

$16-20/hr will land you in the range of someone who possesses at least some of those qualities.

$800 for 55 hours per week for two young kids is not an attractive rate. You'd be offering an average rate below $15/hour, for a schedule that has the potential to burn out your nanny. An average rate of $16-17/hour ($880-935/week) would be a much more attractive offer and on par with what most nannies make.

800 for two kids at 55hours is not a great rate and is barely what a nanny make for one child for the same hours. You are looking at 18-20 average, might be able to find someone inexperience for 16-17.

I am mostly looking for info from parents but we have no idea what expectations we should set for pay in our nanny search. Obviously, since we are looking ata 55 hour week, we will pay overtime and consider providing some money for health insurance. But from what I've seen, the range for pay for a nanny doesn't match the hourly rates being thrown around here. I've seen people say 800 per week is a great rate but others claim that they wouldn't get out of bed for less than 20 bucks an hour. I don't know what's normal (compared to NY where rates seem to be more clearly defined) but can someone point me to what's a normal weekly rate for a nanny in Nova? Two kids. An infant and toddler? 55 hours a week?
