In nova, I would tend to agree $20 for two kids and 23-25 for three kids. If they are in a share then there is extra money to deal with the two families.

I think $3-5/hr is fair for each additional child.

Our nanny sets her base rate for 1 child at $15 and adds $3 for each additional child. (I didn't realize it was unusual to not have that agreed upon upfront.)

I'm paid the same weather the family has 1 or 4 children. Never worked with more then 4.

We are in nova. We pay 18/hour for two. I am going to pay her 20 for the hours she has all three kids.

I wouldn't ask until you've come to some agreement with your spouse about where you are wiling to go.

Does everyone ask? My friends don't do that.

If she's exceptional, $25 is the usual. If she's just your average warm body, she's overpaid.

She gets yearly cost of living raises, bonuses, a raise for the second child, and other yearly raises. She has the older children about two hours a day but that means two hours with three children altogether, which I recognize is hard work.

Plus summers?

You could consider offering another perk, in lieu of a raise, if she is already paid a solid market rate. After being with a family for a time, the stress of an MBs maternity leave, and the addition of a newborn, extra vacation would be a godsend.

Whether or not/how much you raise her rate should depend on whether she is paid below, at, or above market now, how often she gets raises, and how happy you are with her performance (you say she's wonderful so we'll assume that's a big thumbs up).

I'm in the minority but I don't usually expect raises for additional children. However, I'm also typically paid above "market rates" and feel that I'm being paid for my skills and qualifications rather than the specific tasks I have to perform each day, and adding an extra kid into the mix doesn't change my skills or qualifications at all. But like I said, I'm in the minority.

Is her current rate appropriate for a three-child job? If it is, you could probably get away with no raise - and just give a new-baby bonus - because the time when the older is at school will offset the work she's doing when they're all home. If it isn't a three-child rate, you should bump her up to that (since you clearly don't want to lose her!).

I can't give solid advice on this because I charge $5 more per child. One kid is $15, two $20 and three is $25. I live in a different area so my prices aren't outrageous here. I just don't see caring for another child as "easy". It's a ton more work and hassle then an extra $40-50 a week would be worth in my eyes.

I guess a break down of the actual hours she is with 1vs all 3 children would help us determine an appropriate raise. Also how often she gets raises.

Is the "new baby" raise the same if you are going from 2 to 3 children as the advice (around $1 an hour) for going from 1 to 2 children?

On the one hand she has the older children less than before the new baby because they are in school more. On the other hand, when she has all three kids, that's really working hard. She's been with us awhile and has gotten steady raises. She's wonderful.
