OP, I agree with everyone else- let your employer know as soon as possible. And be sure to get confirmation that they approve the time.

Letting them know early allows them to plan ahead, doesn't make them panicked about short-term care, and builds good will.

I'll just add - be sure to ask BEFORE you book a plane ticket. Our former nanny simply announced to us that she would need certain days off because of tickets she had already booked. That was not a good way to handle it.

Great advice.

Perhaps as soon as you know for sure.

As soon as possible is always best. At my old office, if we wanted to request time of within 5 days of a holiday, we had to request the time off a month in advance.

Definitely as soon as possible, but at least a month when you're talking about around the holidays. In my office job, the call for leave requests from supervisors happens in early September. If you don't put in a request then for holiday leave, you typically can't take it because we have to have office coverage. It's also more difficult and expensive to find back-up care. Not saying that you shouldn't take off around a holiday of course, just that you need to give your bosses plenty of time to find alternate arrangements.

+1

A month is plenty of notice, though.

I have started working for a new family in May . I get 7 days vacation of my picking and a week and half they take. I have taken 3 days this past summer and let them know day I started so had no problem there .

Im considering asking to take 2 days off week after thanksgiving so I can go visit a friend (flight are 200 cheaper if I fly back Tuesday vs Sunday )

What is the typical reasonable amount of time to request 2 days in a row off ?
