I bet he doesn't get paid only as little as he needs to live on. In fact, if he put his child in daycare instead of getting a nanny, he could lower his salary.

I interviewed for a nanny position recently and the father asked me what my rate is.
I told him my rate and he told me that I was asking for too much. He then proceeded to ask me to list my bills so that he could "figure out what you need to live on." I laughed and told him that I had no interest in working for him.
Just a vent.
