I don't think you need lots of kids to make this work. My 3.5 year old started preschool this year with zero problems with transitions. He has two younger siblings, so was already learning to share and wait patiently for his turn and for attention, and we followed a very regular schedule each day so he was used to that. We also did about 4 classes each week so he also understood understood following directions, and doing things with other kids. We also had regular playdates and saw other kids at the park.

Honestly, I think the most helpful thing was that because he's had a nanny, he was also used to multiple caregivers, not just mommy.

You've got a class of 2, op. I think you could make it work if you think through what you want them to learn.

If they want you on-call for sick days and holidays, they keep paying you FT wages. And no, you do NOT double up and pretend to be the housekeeper to. Lol.

If they are 3yrs old, you can hold off preschool for another year. Put them in two half days at age four and just find a pt nanny job those hours or do housework. They will get a general sense of how school works with two days and you will keep them engaged by having a curriculum at home.

The entire point of preschool is to socialize a child in a structured group setting. While learning new concepts is part of it, the major point is to teach children how to follow direction and interact nicely with other children so when they enter kindergarten they won't overwhelm the teacher or be overwhelmed themselves by all the rules and other students. I don't think a nanny even with playgroups can provide the same environment a preschool can (socially). The best you can do is keep a very structured environment and routine that is divided into teaching different subjects throughout the day. If the children have a playroom, break the room into different sections to mimic a preschool room and create lesson plans that incorporate dramatic play, sensory play, literacy development, wall charts that focus of the subject of week etc. I'd visit a preschool and observe to get an idea of how they structure everything if you haven't taught preschool before. But honestly I think the children should do at least one or two days of actual preschool before they enter kindergarten otherwise they are going to take a lot longer to adjust.
