I don't have any sympathy on the inclement weather issue either. You can use your vacation time or leave without pay if you don't want to drive in to work like everyone else.

From your post its unclear if you are saying that your MB might not pay you for time worked or might not pay you for time while you are not working but they are on vacation. If its the the first, you are legally entitled to be paid for all hours worked. She can't decide not to pay you for time you have put in. If you are worried that you will not get paid vacation time while she is away and you are not working then it depends on your contract.

No,I'm not kidding and we aren't in disagreement that the MB should definitely tell the nanny the situation regarding pay. However, sometimes MBs don't, for whatever reasons, and a smart nanny looks after herself and doesn't come here wailing like she didn't know the shutdown could affect her.

Be serious. A smart nanny has a backup plan, especially when one of her major complaints is about snow days, something she's known about for at least seven months.

Give me a break.

As for the shutdown, clearly you knew about it ten days ago, when everyone else in the country learned about it. Perhaps your MB wasn't clear about what it might mean to you, but it really is your responsibility to insure your own security.

Looks like you want a new job. Good luck!

?

are you kidding? if the family for any reasons cannot pay the nanny for the work the nanny is doing under the contract, it is the family's responsibility to tell the nanny. the nanny is not furloughed, she is not a federal employee. my DH is home because of the shutdown and does not get any pay, and we still pay all our bills, mortgage, aftercare for the kids and so on. for sure we do not expect people to work for free for us. if we could not pay, we would tell them upfront, not after two weeks on payday. this is dishonest.

also, I find strange what the woman says, about not being sure id she gets paid or not. Fed workers are not being paid, even the ones who are essential and have to work. they essential workers will get paid after the shutdown is over, the other may or may not get back pay, but I do not see how this woman is expecting any pay if she is at home furloughed

I am confused by this story- You have been there for 2 years and all has been peachy and now they tell you all at once:
- no pay during furlough
- no pay when family is away
- no snow days

If this is correct, I would wonder if something has happened that made them suddenly value you less.

That is crap OP about not paying you next week.
Re: weather policy. We used to follow the federal decisions too until a couple years ago my work (non-gov) switched to a work from home policy. So if I do not want to work on a snow day I need to use a vacation day. Given this we moved to a case by case basis and offered to bring kids to Nanny's house if she was worried about weather but we thought it was fine. It has not always been the case that DC situations mirror those in the suburbs.

I think it's wrong that they only just now told you this!

You need to move on. Hopefully they can pay you up till Friday. For the next week, yes they more than likely won't pay you. Take that week to line up new work.
Hopefully you saved some for the times in between jobs (which we know happens a lot)

Start looking tonight on care or sittercity (hell there is a parent looking for a nanny while her nanny is away on family emergency). Even if you can just find temp work til the long term job comes around. Take this time to join agencies as well.

I understand it's a tough situation all around but they could have told thou sooner.

I was really clear too about coming to work when weather conditions are bad and they told me they understand etc and to check the opm.gov website the always paid me for snow days, hurricane dc in the last years now looks like I have to come to work even if the weather is terrible!! Or I don't get pay!

Then they have made a major change to your agreement, and cannot fault you if you choose to look for new employment.

I was very open with my bosses upon hiring that when it comes to inclement weather, if its too dangerous for you to go to work, its equally dangerous for me. There will be none of this, "well I have to telecommute from my warm cushy home, so you need to trek here in the snow and ice". As far as the shut down, she has to pay you for hours worked, no ifs and or buts, so I would plan on working until the end of this week, and having a back up plan for after. This shutdown is not going to end before the 17th, if even then. Good luck!

Hi!! Nanny here!

I had been working for the same family for more than 3 years now.....moms works in the government, dad work in marketing (private company) since the shutdown the mom is working normally but today she told me that her salary should be fine until this Friday (October,11) and after that she doesn't know what's going to happen ......next week the family it's going to be away ( vacation) and I asked the mom today if at least they can pay me this week she told me that all depends if she receives her regular paycheck this Friday!! Mmmm what about next week?? Don't know what to do how handle this situation....also early this year she told me that even a bad weather (snow storm, hurricane etc) she need me to come to work because now her work regulations changes and even in bad weather she have to work from home if I can't come because the bad weather I'm not going to be pay ......advise please!! Anybody else having this situation??

Sorry for the grammar mistake!!
