If they still need/want a nanny now, they can start the hiring process now while they have plenty of free time.

No, I'm not. I have no connection to the feds other than as a tax payer. I was just pointing out that the timing is particularly bad if one is employed by the feds or one of their contractors. I also said it was not OP's problem.

op, here: just wanted to update you all.

Finally had the conversation with my employers last week, and it went as well as could be expected. They insisted that this was the worst possible time for me to quit, and things have been tense, but I'm so glad I bit the bullet and did it. Thanks for the help!

When you see them in the morning OP, just mention that you need to talk to both of them to discuss something very important and that you would like to talk to them as soon as possible since it is quite urgent.

Trust me...They will find a time for all three of you to sit down and talk.

MB here. Email the parents (or talk with one of them in the morning) and say you really need 5 minutes with one or both of them this week to discuss something without the kids around. Let them tell you when is good.

Then give notice, written notice included, etc...

Just get it over with - far better to give them longer notice than to dither over waiting for a perfect moment that may not happen.

You don't need to give notice to both.

Why do both parents need to be there? Just give notice to the parent you think is most reasonable. Email is fine, that's how our culture communicates now.

You are making excuses. Have a letter prepared. Tell them in person on Friday, assuming you work on Friday. Then hand them the letter as well. You do not have to have both parents present. JUST DO IT!

Tell them as you're leaving for the weekend. And have a letter to hand to them as well. Always keep a copy for yourself. The child can be in another room for two minutes.

I've tried to quit for two weeks now, but there has literally not been a single time when both parents are home other than in the morning immediately before it's time to take the child to school. Coming in early isn't an option, as I don't want to have the conversation with the child around.

If you were/are an MB or DB, would you prefer having a written letter of resignation handed to you in the AM and then chat later in the evening, or have an email sent to you? I hate the thought of doing this by email, but my window of opportunity to give them a good notice length is dwindling fast. I wanted to give them six weeks, but it will only be four now.
