getting this straight - family kept you on with them for 9 years - which sounds like it was WAY longer than vitally necessary given that kid is in MS now. And you are bitter that you did not get a gift. Now, I will agree that I would give a gift (unless other stuff's going on financially with the family - furloughs and sequester perhaps?) but I frankly do not understand getting bent out of shape about not getting one and from that leaping to - "well I guess they never cared about me after all". entitled much?

It is up to you OP.

You are by no means obligated to give her any money, but if she was by all accounts an outstanding nanny to your family and you and your son loved her to death, then to show her how much you appreciate her, I would send her off w/a little something. Preferably cash form.

It would only be because you wanted to. Not by any means because you had to. Again...ONLY if she went above and beyond her job as a nanny.

I received $500 at my annual review. If you would have given her a bonus, I think it would be nice to do that as well as give her a formal reference letter.

If you would have given a bonus at a year, I think that's a nice thing to still do along with the two weeks notice. Basically more to reward excellent performance if that's what she face you. But I don't think anyone would expect more than the contractural notice for a job lasting under a year.

We let go our nanny because our son got into a daycare and would like to determine if severance pay is usually given in this type of situation, and if so, how much? The contract states nothing about severance pay. She was with our family slightly less than a year. She was given two weeks notice and referrals to new families seeking care. Any suggestions on parting ways financially? Thanks.
