I did it. Took a year off to travel and volunteer around the world. Then went to graduate school when I returned. Was out of the nanny world for about 5 years before returning. I never had any trouble getting back into the field as everyone was very impressed with my volunteer and international travel experience.

I am sure they would have no problem with it. Everyone is entitled to some time off. Esp. in the nanny profession which is both physically and emotionally taxing. But rewarding.....

OP I did.

I worked as a nanny for about 10 years and prior to that was 5 years in preschool.

I needed and wanted a change. I didn't nanny again for almost 6 years.
I had forgotten the love I had for it. And to be all honest, I've grown as apperson and I've finally realized who I am. I know I am a lot calmer, I have more experience (not only with nanning but with all people and in all situations). I take things as they come and don't stress.

I'm glad I took off and discovered who I am.

All of my nanny families since than know I did other fields of work and don't seem to mind. In fact I can relate more to some of my bosses work (as we have done the same thing) and it helps bridge the "gaps" MB/DB and nanny sometimes have.

MB here - I would certainly understand someone taking a year off and not hold it against them in any way, especially after 20 years of experience.

Enjoy the year!

I have no direct experience with this but in general I'd think very highly of someone who chose to take some time off for themselves in the way you describe, and would consider myself lucky to hire them when they decided to return to work. I imagine you'd be very fresh and energized after such a sabbatical!

I've been a nanny/household manager for over 20 years and have the opportunity to take off working for up to 1 year. I'm wondering what families might think when I get back into the market. Any experiences?
