If you drive the kids around - yes they should reimburse you at the IRS rate. If you take the kids on metro - they should pay for it.

I agree with this except in situations where the outing is for the benefit of the nanny not the child. Infants don't need outings but some nannies get very bored and understandably want to get out. This is fine but it inappropriate to expect your employer to both allow this and cover your costs for the outing including the mileage.

You don't want the nanny going crazy in your house all day, do you? That would be insane.

Yes, but talk to your boss about it - ideally you'll track the mileage on your odometer but if you've forgotten on either end a mapping program is acceptable.

PT, FT, sitter, nanny, doesn't matter. If you're using your vehicle to drive the children either at the parents' request (pick up from school, drive to soccer practice) or because they live too far from activities you'd otherwise walk to (libraries, parks, pools) they should reimburse you at IRS rate. However, I personally think that if the parents don't ask you to drive/you could walk most places and you choose to drive simply because you prefer it, you should accept the cost of gas/wear and tear.

Is this a common benefit for part time babysitter to pay for gas mileage? IRS rate multiplied by distance?
