Everything you want to know, and then some.
You can do a search on the website for "domestic workers" and get tons of info.

OP, are you still here? Did they pay you yet?

OP, you don't have to sue. The labor department at your state will take care of this cost free to you. Just check online and you will find all of the necessary paperwork to file. It's really pretty simple.

Small claims court. Once they get the letter you are taking them to court, they may pay up. I did small claims (landlord issue) and it was so worth it. Even though I did not get everything I felt I should, it was satisfying to make them have to go to court and look bad in front of the judge! Do it!

I am so sorry they are doing that to you. A week's salary is no small change.

How did they go about cheating you out of money?

Both my employers and I live in Washington DC. I was paid on the books by a payroll company.

What state are you in? Even if they paid you off the books, they can be forced to pay up.

Your states DLLR will have a claim form to fill out. Be prepared to have proof of money owed as well as be able to show that everything was done above board. It can take up to a year depending on your location, these offices are always backed up. Good luck.

A lawyer will cost too much. Take them to small claims court

Can anyone help me navigate this problem. Who do I contact. Will I need a lawyer or is this something I can handle on my own. The amount of money is minor but of course the principle is what is driving me to pursue this.

Thanks.
