I work many PT positions and while I get guaranteed hours and I am paid if they don't need me, I usually take sick days off unpaid. I hardly EVER call in sick, only when I might be contagious with something non cold like where the kids might have already been exposed, or I can't stand much less be able to work.

Usually parents are pretty good about letting me do a babysitting night later on to earn the chance to get that pay that I missed out on, or will just give it to me paid anyways. Or if I am feeling just slightly under the weather and they are home and can let me go, they might offer to let me go home early with full pay. But I never expect paid sick with PT positions and I would never act like that summer sitter without mentioning how I feel to the parents and let them decide what they want to happen.

Also, as mentioned for a very short term gig like this, I would probably assume no pay and no make up hours for it.

You aren't required to tip and you aren't required to provide paid sick days for a short term gig like that. She should have called out.

I've had a grad student watching my elementary school children over the summer. We agreed to 3 random weeks so she could work her other job. We had some minor issues during the the 1st two wks, but nothing major to point out.

During the 3rd week, she called in sick. After having Wed off, she came in for the remainder of the week, but the kids said she "slept" on the couch while they were watching a movie and she sent them to their rooms after breakfast.

This was our first summer using a sitter instead of summer camps / family trips. I feel I didn't do a good job setting expectations and we never discussed what would happened if she were sick. So I paid her the entire amount, but didn't give her any tip. She used to be our best sitter, but this weekly care-taking is not for her and sadly I will not be using her again.

For the future - do weekly sitters get sick leave? Do I need to put everything in writing? What are some of the other issues that I need to bring up?
