Are they reimbursing you for your mileage on the job? Do you enjoy any particular age group a little more than the others? Are both families experienced in hiring/managing nannies (and canyou get any history on that from them)? Where do you stand on the housework issue?

I agree with this. I would totally go for position 1 but if you do not like the driving distance and don't want to take the chances of being stuck in commute traffic etc, then that is a big con of that position. Frankly, it's not just the housekeeping for the second that gets to me, but the running of errands and the extreme difference in pay. Even at $15/hr, I would find it hard to think of any pros to it over the first position as the driving to me (if considered horrible) would never be as "con" as all the extras the position 2 would want for the lower pay. If that makes sense?

Family 1, no doubt.

I much prefer working with younger children, and the pay is much better. I prefer to nanny, not tutor.

Family 2 sounds terrible OP. Not paying you enough for what they expect. And picking up their groceries while you buy your own? Major, major red flag. Please don't accept that job! Family 1 sounds great!

Family 1's location is within a heavy traffic area. It took me 23 minutes to get there on a Saturday afternoon, so I imagine it would take longer during the weekdays. Family 2 resides in a less populated area with less traffic.

Family 1 mentioned reimbursing for mileage on the job, but Family 2 didn't, I guess because activity is 3 miles from home 2 days a week. Family 2 asked about grocery shopping and I asked that I get paid for mileage so was asked if I would mind going grocery shopping when I get my groceries, which I wouldn't.

Red flag OP. Family 2 sound like users. Instead of reimbursing for the mileage, they want you to do their grocery shopping on your own time? Would you be paid for the time you spend shopping? It sounds like the commute is a big pull for you, but commute aside which job do you prefer?

+1! Family #1 hands down! Family #2 wants a nanny/housekeeper for the cost of a babysitter, no thanks!

This. I don't ant to call you a fool but I agree. Family 2 is going to use and abuse you.
Traffic smaffic... you're getting paid $20 an hour to sit in it! (and I live in the SF Bay Area, I KNOW traffic)

Family 1 hands down. I prefer families with more than one child. The pay rate is considerably higher. The commute wouldn't bother me. You're guaranteed mileage reimbursement for work-related driving.

Light housekeeping is never just light housekeeping. Take job #1.

I'd go with family 1. Drive might be a pain for the commute home, but it's doable.

I think your ultimate decision should be based on your preferences, but as for me, I'd definitely go with family one. I don't mind a commute, the pay is better, no housekeeping or errands, I prefer the ages of family 1 (not a fan of preteens and I love little kids), and the on the spot offer would indicate you guys really clicked (or it could mean they're desperate, which would be a red flag if you got that vibe)

I interviewed with two families for after school care and am having difficulty with choosing which one I feel in the long run I won't regret picking and will be happy with.

Family 1:
-3:30 to 6:30 M-F but may have days I might be asked to stay later minimally if needed
-2 children, 5 years and 20 months
-Pick up one child from school, then pick up little one from pre school and come home, so about 8 miles driving on the job which would be reimbursed
-Take child to lesson one day a week 5 miles away and stay
-Give snacks, go over any homework, play with, give baths and start dinner
-Pay rate family offered is $20/hr with guaranteed pay
-Distance from my home to the family's is about 13 miles, so 26 miles roundtrip everyday
-No house related work except for picking up after kids as needed

Family 2:
-3:30 to 6:30 M-F but may be asked to stay later minimally if needed
-1 child, 10 years old
-Be at the bus stop and take to home.
-Only driving is taking to activity 3 miles away two days a week, 5:15 and 6p.m. then going home as parent will pick up
-Give snack, homework supervision, dinner prep, supervise chores, grocery shopping 1x a week
-Asked to do light housekeeping (sweep floors 2-3x a week, wipe down table and kitchen counters, laundry 1-2x wk, change sheets 1x a week, pick up in living room as needed)
-Pay rate is $10-$15/hr. Did not discuss in interview as parent didn't bring it up, but I would not be able to accept the position for less than $13.50/hr. Guaranteed pay.
-distance from my home to the family's is 6 miles, so about 12 miles roundtrip everyday

Family 1 offered me the job at the interview. I asked if I could let them know in 3 days as I have an interview with Family 2 the next day. Had the interview with Family 2 today and parent said she had one other interview but really liked me and would let me know in 2 days. Both sent me a thank you email after interview. I want to accept the position with Family 1 because they 100% want me, rate is higher, and no housekeeping, but the driving seems a bit much to me, I'm dreading being in long traffic possibly, and there are 2 kids vs 1. If Family 2 offers me the position, there would be minimal driving, but light housekeeping would be part of the job, and the pay rate would be lower.

Which would you prefer?
