She wants you to sponsor because she doesn't really have the money and once you sign, you are responsible for paying her tuition if she can't. If you sponsor her, YOU have to supply the school with account information showing that YOU have the money in the bank and accessible ($20k each year)

I believe you need bank statements to support the visa. Not positive, but I'm pretty sure you do.

This is the issue. While the AP would be primarily responsible for everything, if s/he left without paying all if her bills, or decided to stop paying, the sponsor would be responsible for them.

previous au pair here... although i stayed in the states on a diff visa, i know many au pair who's host family/friends/ families they babysat for help sponsor the visa. ( but obviously the au pair would be financially responsible for everything)

She did sign the paperwork. And, after going through everything and getting the visa the AP was denied re access into the US after holiday break because she had used the host family's address on the visa. Not sure how/if it got resolved.

Students with funds of their own (or from family) don't need a sponsor. They need to first be accepted to a college or university, then fill out the financial verification paperwork. Once the school gets that, they will give the student a letter/form to take to the consulate for a visa interview. No sponsor needed.

If you sign the sponsor paperwork, YOU are on the hook for any money she ends up not having. NOT a smart plan...

All universities have this information on their websites, including how much money she will need in the bank in order to get them to give her the ok to come to school.

Op here. Thanks, I checked it out but it's really about doing it to continue to have the ap work for you, which isn't our intent. Info on sponsoring legitimately seems to be lacking.

Once I saw that I would have to sign an affidavit swearing to the government that I would pick up her expenses if she stopped going to school before the end if the semester I told her I wouldn't do it. I can't be on the hook for another persons expenses. My coworker successfully did it though.

Our former AP is interested in coming back to the US on a student visa. She will not be working for us (so this isn't a "get a student visa while you stay working for us as an AP" situation), but wants to study for her masters in the US and has a place to stay with close friends. She has money saved up to pay for school but has asked her to be her sponsors for the Visa. Has anyone successfully done this? The process and what we're signing up for concerns me, but I'd like to do what we can to help this former AP who is really like family at this point. It's difficult finding information about we'd be on the hook for and what info we need to provide. TIA.
