Well, they can't force you to work. That is slavery.
If an employer tried to pull that with me, I would be inclined to quit weather they fired me or not. I would start looking right away. Are they such jerks in other ways?

MB here - I wouldn't do this to our nanny in a million years!!! That's awful!
They had notice, and if they had the slightest idea that they might not be able to get the time off themselves they should have made alternative arrangements. Why can't they pay for a temp nanny for the week?
If it is not a disaster for you financially to be unemployed after your vacation, assuming they fire you for going, then just go and start looking for another job when you come back.
If you can't afford to be unemployed, try to explain to them why cancelling your vacation is a huge problem for you & yoru husband and that you felt you did everything possible to make it as easy as possible for them, i.e. plenty of notice. If they insist that you don't go or they will fire you, tell them they need to compensate you for any expenses incurred. And, start looking for another job right away, they don't sound like very nice people.

OP here, I am definitely going on my vacation. It's the only trip I take (and the only requested time I have asked for). If they decide to fire me, I can always find another position.

Take your vacation. I guess legally they can do that, though I'm not a lawyer so I don't know for sure, buy thru may be on the hook for your costs since you made financial decisions based on their word. I think technically it's a contract?

I think you need to politely remind them how much advance notice you gave, and that they gave you approval.
Then go on vacation.
They can advertise for a babysitter to cover the days you are gone. There's a lot of people on care.com, etc., that will take fill-in gigs while looking for other jobs, etc., etc.

My vacation time was approved four months ago for me to go on vacation next week with my husband. I asked my employers a few times since then if it was definitely approved and they said yes (and I got it in writing), so we planned and paid for our trip.
Now they are telling me that they couldn't get the time off so I can't go. I have the approval in writing, so I don't think this is right.
