I am surprised. I thought most people around here did it on the books. I do and would never hire someone who wouldn't agree to being on the books.

I used care.com. In my ad I stated job would be on the books. I got many decent responses and hired a woman who had never worked over the table before. And was shocked I was willing to pay her prior rate and do it all legally. Just make it clear in all your responses.

Most families who go through nanny agencies prefer to pay on the books.

Why do you think that? The agencies wash their hands after they get their money. Never any follow up to see if taxes are being paid, unfortunately.

I am just completing a full time search for a nanny and the majority of candidates flinched when we stated we wanted to pay taxes. They either did not want to or had never before and had absolutely no knowledge about the issue. These people were also legal to work here. I was shocked and annoyed.

I don't think there's any way around it if you want to be paid legally. There are just many families not willing to do so. Better to find out up front and not waste your time.

If its any consolation, as a family that pays on the books, we had the same issue. Many, many nannies just weren't interested.

I have been applying to positions on Care and would always ask if the family is open to paying taxes on the books legally, and usually would receive minimal responses I believe because I added that. I say this because I stopped adding that in my responses the past few days and received replies back from several families about positions. How can I ask to be paid on the books as a household employer without alienating families?
