Aside from cash, my favorite gift from employers was to simply have me stay while they all served me cookies and hot chocolate. This was around Christmas, and it just really made me feel appreciated. The kids loved it, because this was one of the only times they had both parents and nanny all in one room at the same time.

I know my MB always wants to do something meaningful, which I appreciate, and she feels that cash doesn't "count." But at the holidays they got me a gift card to a local spa, which I regifted. Recently, they gave me cash and I actually spent it on myself and did something fun! They spent the same amount either way, but as employers it's hard for them to really know my tastes and preferences, etc. Cash is the better gift; write a thoughtful note if you want to be meaningful.

Paid day off for my bday.

Cash to buy work clothes and other necessities. Never underestimate the power of a cash bonus!

Over the years I've accumulated a thick file of reference letters and thank you notes. And an ongoing relationship with the families, in whatever way possible. That's what I value most. (A fair living wage that commensurates with my skills, goes without saying.)
