Subject: Mature four year old chore routine
My 4 year old
-unloads the dishwasher (with big brothers help)
-takes out the recycling and trash (brother helping)
-picks up his own messes (toys, plates, laundry, etc.)
-helps bathe, brush, feed the dogs
-sets the table/helps with dinner clean up
-puts away his clean laundry
-makes his bed
I started him with just cleaning up after himself (at around 18 months or so, things like picking up toys, putting clothes in the hamper, etc.) then I added chores one by one. He has a pretty responsible 8 year old brother who helps him with chores when he needs it so I can just stay out of the way and let them be responsible for their work.

Nice job. Maybe you could come over here and get MB to realize that her 8 yr old son should be doing at least some of these by now and that it is not ok to refuse to do stuff because his mom doesn't make him. When I try to enforce rules, she just tells me he doesn't need to do it. Ugh. If the position wasn't great in every other possible way, I would consider leaving.

I always start with them being responsible for cleaning up their own toys, taking their own plate to the sink, putting their shoes away when we get home. If she's mastered cleaning up after herself as well as she's able, then I move onto setting the table and helping with things that don't just center around her.
I've found that kids actually like having these responsibilities. Appropriate responsibilities help their self-esteem.
