OP, it's not based on whether the job is a babysitting job or a nannying job or what you're actually doing for the family specifically. It's based on how much the family is paying you per year and/or per quarter. So for a regular babysitting gig for a family for whom you are not otherwise working, you're not going to make over the minimum amount for when taxes kick in. Like it or not, the family is paying you legally and not paying taxes on that amount would have been ILLEGAL. Lesson learned. Ask for a higher rate for babysitting next time?

OP here. Exactly! I turned down another job that would have paid ,e full price. I have never had taxes taken out of babysitting gigs before.

No. The fact is that I rarely babysit for them and this was not our agreement. From what I understand, you do not have to tax babysitting unless you make more then 1600.00 (Not sure the exact number) a year. I hardly make that babysitting.

Any extra babysitting I did for families I worked for was added to my check. Sorry OP, you will not be getting sympathy for this one.

My nannyoccasionally sits outside her standard hours. We ALWAYS pay her with one check per period. If you discussed and agreed to being paid over the table, you are a little off to think you would be paid any other way.

Yep, as your employer any and all time you work for them is required to be taxed. Just as they are required to pay you time and a half beyond 40 hours.

They're doing it the legal way.

When our nanny puts in extra time for us we just write her a check - no taxes involved and it doesn't get logged as income. She likes it, and it's easier for us. But it isn't the truly legal above-board way to do it.

What did they tell you when the first asked you to come in? It should have been discussed if this was your first time working after hours.

Soooo....pretty sure I just got F*&#ed over for babysitting tonight for my nanny family...I babysat for 5 hours and was told to add it to the calendar on Monday to include it in my work hours...I was under the impression I would be getting paid separately because it wasn't during my work week but rather taking time out of my weekend to come babysit (driving 36miles round trip)....I am getting taxes taken out of that 5hours and I am pissed!!! When you do extra babysitting for your nanny families do they add that into your check or pay you separately for your time off???
