If your contract has a term (end date) which is in the future, you can sue them for "wrongful termination". Since you're essentially unemployed now, you can get free legal aid. Are you in the DC area?

The legal grounds for suing are "wrongful termination" if there was a valid term contract.

Thoughts?

I think you're super annoying and wish you'd get banned from the forum. Since you asked.

You're the lying lawyer who thinks the nanny can't sue for wrongful termination? How annoying.

I wish OP would come back to clarify some of these important points.

I think there is more to this story you are telling us. Did your employer regularly go through your purse before this? Did you take time off of work, and if you did, did you schedule it beforehand, or call in without notice?

I can't imagine on what grounds you could sue. You can be fired for no reason and there is no legal entitlement to notice. If you apply for unemployment and they claim that you were fired for cause you can appeal. The family would need to state what the cause action was for you to be denied unemployment.

If you have no contract you might be out of luck. What reason did they give you?

I honestly hope you're not suggesting OP should have told them her personal affairs, are you?
Unless her contract says, "at will", she has a solid case against the parents.

Ouch. I don't think you're going to be significantly helped by the responses here (judging by PP) Op. I'm sorry - sounds like you're having an epically tough June.

I don't really see how you could prove the ground or sue successfully. No lawyer is likely to see enough potential in a case like this to make it worth their while and you're unlikely to have the resources (or possibly will) to sustain a long nasty fight.

Did they not give you a reason for the action? Did you ask? Did they give you any severance and do you have any contractual language about termination/severance that can help you?

Sorry OP that sucks. But have to echo the other PPs. Why do you think that is the reason and how do you know they went through your purse? And what would you sue them for? I can see you filing for unemployment...but I"m not sure what you could sue for.

Whoa. Sorry OP. How exactly did they fire you? Did you ask why?

What exactly would you be suing them for?

Why do you think it's because of the fact that you had an abortion? And, what proof do you have that they went through your purse?

The family I work for just fired me and I think it's because they found out I had an abortion last week. Now I know that nannies are at will employees and can be fired for any reason, but should I consider hiring a lawyer and trying to sue them for this? I have just had a wonderful yearly review from them and then they fire me without notice and they didn't give me a valid reason. Do I have a case? Is there anything I can do? I'm also almost positive the way they found out was by going through my purse. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
