We "gave" AP the old (2005) minivan and bought a new sedan for HM. ALL of our APs have inflicted some damage on our vehicles so it just doesn't make sense to give them a brand new car to use. If we need the minivan for family transport at any time, we just give her DH's sedan to use (also older - 2006) temporarily. The one benefit to her having the minivan around the clock is now I just give her gas money each week for her "work miles" and she keeps the gas in the van. Previously, we were switching back and forth with vehicles and she was never keeping track or adding gas, just leaving it empty and occasionally throwing 20 bucks at DH. It got old pretty quick!

Get an automatic family car.

I recommend something with a third row if you think you may want her to bring home friends for play dates anytime in the next 5-7 years.

I'm currently shopping for one for my AP. looking at Hondas (accord, civic and crv). Called the insurance company already and, although the crv will cost the most, it was quoted the lowest for insurance. My priorities are: safety, reliability, mpg cost and storage (may use this car for the long road trips, plus needs to fit our double stroller). No need for a third row as DCs are under 5 and no carpooling yet. Will probably get the crv.

We also need to get a third car. The AP will take our minivan thru the week, and I will drive the third car to work. She will likely take the third car on her off time, since we don't plan for it to seat 3 car seats. The van is our "kid car."

We are looking for something used with low miles and durable, like a little Honda, Toyota, or Ford.

Hi OP - I think maybe the trouble is that there are so many different cars and so many different needs. What is your budget? What are you most concerned about - size, gas mileage, safety, etc. I just don't even know how I would begin to suggest a car for you given that all you've said is that you need it to fit two kids.

OP here -- aside from talking to my insurance agent about insurance coverage for the car/driver, I'm not sure why my insurance agent would have insight on a good car to get for an au pair to drive...

Don't you think you should ask your insurance agent about this?

This is our first time hosting an au pair. We need to acquire/lease a 3d car for her to use since we need her to take the 2 kids places. Can any experienced host families offer insight on the best kind of car to look at?
