I disagree and I'm also an MB. I think it's a really sweet gesture that would be well appreciated if that is the kind of relationship you have with your MB.

I don't do anything on my own behalf, but I work with my charges to make a card or something and we always make a special breakfast for MB or DB on her/his birthday (I come in early to help the kids make it).

I am clearly the exception on this board but I don't do anything for MB/DB birthdays or for Mother's/Father's Day. They handle those themselves, with musical cards and clay handprints and flowers.

My MB and DB really don't want to feel like I'm being tasked with anything quite that personal if that makes sense. They're extremely hands-on with their son and when they hired me specifically said they didn't want a "third parent," so I'm respectful of appropriate employer/employee boundaries in that sense.

I wish them a happy birthday or a happy mother's day and that's it.

At Christmas I give them a child-related gift.

If you are close, it is totally appropriate to give her something small (don't listen to the Debbie Downers). I do agree with PP that it should be something child related though. I usually give picture frames with some cute shots of the kids in them or a framed piece of LO's artwork, depending on MB just baking some cookies/cupcakes could be a really great gesture as well. I usually present it with a card from myself though, so it is sort of a joint gift from LO and me. I think its great you have an actual relationship with your MB and feel comfortable acknowledging important moments in each other's lives-hopefully she is as great when your bday comes around!

I agree with this. Of course you aren't obligated to get your employer a gift, but if you are close and want to do something, I think that's great.

I am a nanny, the mother of my charges' birthday is next wk. What gift should I give her? She is so generous to me.
