We offered hours off because our nanny worked 40 hours over 5 days as 10/10/10/5/5. We just specified the 80 hours of vacation could only be used in increments of 5 hours.

Two weeks of paid vacation time per year is the minimum. If a legal holiday falls on a regular work day, it's a paid day off.

I offer 3 sick days and pay th out at the end of the year if they go unused (rare). If nanny uses her vacation up but has sick left she can use them for doctor's appointments.
I would not offer hours off unless you work from home since having the nanny take a few hours here and there can burn through your own PTO pretty quick if you have to take yours in half day chunks or have a commute. I would offer 4 days per "week" of vacation you plan to offer since that is what she works.

OP I work a FT schedule over 4 days.

I get 5 sick/personal days, all paid holidays, and 2 weeks of vacation (plus health care, but that's not relevant). I suppose I technically receive 8 vacation days but I get to take the full 10 days off because I normally have the 5th weekday off anyway IYSIM?

I work full time and get 5 sick days, 2 weeks paid vacation (10 work days) and paid holidays. I wouldn't offer your nanny any less because she only works 4 out of 5 days a week, especially if she's working 10 hour days.

I would say 3-5 sick days is typical, but the trend these days is shifting away from sick days per se and toward flex PTO. These are days that can be used for sick days, vacation days, or personal time off at the employee's choice. This approach can help avoid a situation where the employee feels she needs to take all her sick days whether she is sick or not to avoid losing them, so she starts calling out with no notice.

The downside is that the employee may not have accrued sick leave in the event of a major illness, but in my experience, most people in nanny jobs and other hourly positions fail to plan for those long-term needs anyway.

Perhaps you should offer in hours rather than number of days, ie 80 hours vs. 8/10 days

We are planning to hire a full time nanny (about 10 hours per day over 4 days.) How many paid sick days is reasonable? Thanks for advice.
