I think for things you choose to invite her to, you would pay for ticket and food, other than that she can pay. You don't have to invite her to everything, but it is part of the experience to take her places. Also keep in mind she makes very little money, so the expense of a day at the amusement park may be nothing to you but is significant money to her.

Unless you go to an extremely expensive park and love eating lobster etc and are really cheap, you should pay for the ticket + food.

Yes, if she's coming with us, I pay for as much as I can/she lets me - meals, admission, etc. If she doesn't have plans, I invite her to everything we do.

I think OP meant cover the cost of her getting into the places, nothing to do with weekly pay. What if OP cant afford to "treat" everytime but whould like the AP to join anyway?

It's not necessarily that you invite your au pair to everything you do and that you pay for everything she does with you.

Obviously, if you require your au pair to work or if you expect her to help you with the kids at all (be honest with yourself on this), then you should pay for all expenses. Also, if you are all out somewhere and you are eating together, then you should pay for her food/drinks.

You are not required to take them with you anywhere and you are not required to pay for off-duty activities. That said, there are variations on whether or not you actually do which will depend on the relationship you have with your au pair, how much money the activities cost, etc. The best thing to do is be totally upfront.

Let's say you are going to a water park for the day. It would be lovely of you to pay for everything. Alternatively, it would be completely fine if you said "hey au pair, we're going to the water park for the day and we'd love for you to join us if you'd like to. We'll pay for your food and drink there, but if you'd like to come, we'll ask you to pay for your ticket. It costs $35 to get into the park. Let me know if you'd like to come. If not, you'll have the day off." And then she gets to decide.
