Can any parent imagine, "no talking to your friends for 10 or 12 hours a day". Just plain stupid. Normal people don't think that way.

People need to get out and about every single day. Or get fat.

OP, you should think about the total package of what you would offer (vacation, sick leave, holidays, etc...) and then make her an offer for the full package inclusive of hours, leave, compensation and any other benefits.

I think your range is more than reasonable, though we don't know where you're located. I'd offer $13 or $14/hour (depending on the whole package) and see what happens. If you hire her in the lower end of your range it gives you room for bonuses and raises if she works out well.

Good luck!

+1

$8-$15/hr depending.

But OP, you won't offend her. Nannying is often a more desirable job for daycare workers because they have only a single family to navigate, no worries about troublesome or lazy coworkers, and a far more manageable number of children! The biggest barrier to hiring her will be ensuring she has access to affordable benefits, which she probably receives from her current place of work. If I were you, I'd offer a slightly lower starting pay rate ($16/hr) plus a health care plan/stipend on top.

You also have to take into account any benefits she is recieving at her daycare center. Teachers who have been working full time for a year or more often receive insurance options, tuition reimbursement, sick/personal days and vacations. Sometimes an increase in pay doesn't justify losing those benefits.

You should not be basing your offer on what she makes now (which can be anywhere from $8-15 depending on how high quality a center it is) rather it should be based on the nanny market for her level of experience and education.

I should also warn that some daycare providers don't adjust well to being nannies if they have never been one before. A nanny position can be isolating, boring if your used to a busy day with multiple children and any cleaning tasks outside of childcare might not sit well with her. So I would make sure she understands what a nanny is/does.

It's irrelevant because daycare workers and nannies are two seperate jobs and nannying typical receives more pay then daycare. I'm sure if she was a daycare provider she will be happy to accept $12 or $13 per hour.

I'm trying to "poach" one of my daughter's daycare teachers (my daughter is 18 months) to come work for me fulltime as our nanny. The teacher has been thinking of leaving the center and I would love it if she came to work for me. The thing is, I'm not sure what's she's currently making - I want to offer her a good, hourly rate but I don't know where to start. I'm clueless as to what she's currently making - how do I offer a competitive, hourly rate without knowing what she's currently making? Any suggestions or general ideas of what a daycare teacher makes at a daycare center (not an in-home center)? I know hourly nanny rates vary widely - I'm thinking between $12-$18/hour but that's a wide range. I don't want to offer her an hourly wage that might be insulting if she's currently making more. Thoughts?

Thanks
