These are highly evolved men. My DH is a great dad, but he really starts to come unraveled after two hours alone with the kids. He'd make a lot of other financial sacrifices and probably take just about any job to avoid taking on full time child care. It just stresses him out too much.
OP, you really need to talk to the parents and find out what they are thinking, then give it at least a month and see what happens. If Dad spends a lot of time hovering around the kids and not looking for a job or otherwise keeping himself busy, think about finding a new job. If he does his own thing most of the time, it is safe to assume that he has no intention of taking over the childcare.
