We have had a French au pair (amazing), a Czech au pair (amazing), a German au pair (too horrid for words; fired after 4 weeks), and a Brazilian au pair (couldn't learn to drive to save her life; fired after 4 months after driving instructor also quit). It's not the country, it's the au pair. The German was the youngest at 19. Czech and French were 21 and Brazilian was 26.

We have had two Brazil APs, and a part-time Brazilian nanny before that--we love them all like family, and our first Brazilian au pair just came back and spent three weeks visiting us last month. We are looking again and starting with Brazil, but looking for particular qualities that we like no matter the nationality--warmth, flexibility, maturity. We have loved each of these woman more than the UK, Australian, and German nannies and au pairs that we have, but that's just our experience, not to generalize. BTW, we *always* have a 22+ age requirement, which seems to cut out a lot of the party girls. None of ours were.

We have a Brazilian AP and she is absolutely awesome. I really really can't say enough. She is mature and a little older. English is flawless. Driving is great, though she hasn't driven in the snow but it wasn't an issue this year. I will work at home and do the driving on a snowy day.

There is a big Brazilian community of APs, but that is a good thing. The last think you need is a lonely and homesick AP who just sits at home when she is off duty.

I love learning about Brazil. Beautiful and interesting country. Our AP and most of her friends are not looking to stay here in the US. just looking for the experience. Not sure it is the same with APs from lesser developed countries.

I am a former Brazilian au pair, and it is hard to generalized. I am from a big city so driving was not a big issue for me. In fact, driving here is way easier then driving in Brazil 1) cars have automatic transition, in Brazil we all drive stick. 2) even though I had never driven in the snow, I never had an accident, and a problem with it.
I was not the party time, but you cannot except a young lady to not go out - specially on the weekends. Like someone else said because there are so many brazilians in the area it is definitely easier for the au pair as she will have less reasons to be home sick, and a hard time with the adaptation.

One problem I do have to admit, but also not generalize is the English skill. Most Brazilian girls are not going to have the best language skills when they arrive. but we do learn fairly quick, and our accent is not hard to understand.

Hope I helped you.

I find it hard to believe that there are no Germans left for summer placement! Our last 2 APs are German (both APIA) - they both wanted summer placement but still hadn't been placed in October when they matched with us.

Do you have a strict age requirement? Both of our APs have been under 21. Our current AP had only had her drivers license for 5 months when she got here. Her driving skills are great. I did have a driving instructor take her out on a practice drive, though, to acclimate her and get her used to beltway & different traffic practice/rules. The German drivers license test is rigorous so I can totally imagine that an 18/19 yo German might very well be a more experience/better driver than a 21+ Brazilian.

We have had a Brazilian for the past 1 1/2 years and know some of her friends. They are great. There is a huge group of Brazilian au pairs in the area which makes it easy for them to assimilate here. Most of the young women want to have a good time when they are over here (and you want them to have a social life!) but our Brazilian went out just as much as our previous one from Eastern Europe. Try to find someone who has lived away from home and is a little older if you're worried about too much partying.

OP here. Normally I had a Sept arrival so I wasn't ready to match yet, but my current AP wants to go home early, so our timing got swapped.

I do see a bunch of Germans on CC, but Not as many on APC or APIA...which I prefer (due to getting a partial credit b/c of leaving AP...)

I'll keep plugging away.

OP, I've never had experience with a Brazilian au pair, but the sites I'm looking at (APIA and CC) seem to have lots of au pairs from a variety of countries looking to start this summer. We're actually looking for someone to start this fall and having trouble because there are so many that would like to come in July. So I'm surprised to hear you're having difficulty.

Many of the Germans will have been matched by now for summer placement, but we've had two Germans arrive in the fall and both were excellent and we had no trouble. There is no rule about when "all" of the candidates from a particular country arrive. You will always find some great candidates at any point during the year, it just may take a little longer. July shouldn't be an off-time though.

I would keep in mind that you one need to find one AP. So if you want to find someone from Europe, tell that to the agency. Tell them that you don't want to look at Brazilian AP's anymore. The minute they realize you one are willing to take a European AP, they will get more serious about finding those candidates for you.

As a side note its a little late for most German AP's - they have usually matched by now for summer placement.

I am asking for experiences not prejudices.

We have had two APs from Brazil. Both were great drivers, though neither had a good sense of direction. Both were very nice. One was terribly homesick and returned after two months. While the other one stayed with us for ten months - she came through a rematch, she never really bonded with the kids or the family. She was not really a party girl, but also not into being an au pair to a tween girl and younger brother. Their relationship lacked the warmth I've seen with our other APs.

OTOH, I know a ton of folks who only host Brazilian APs and even travel there to visit them on vacations.

I am trying to pick a new AP to start in July and frankly I thought there would be more choices for the Northern Europeans since that's their break time before Universities start.

I'm having a hard time finding someone.

However there are like a bazillion Brazilians on the sites. I'm registered with more than one agency.

Those who have hosted a Brazilian AP...how did it go? Are the stereotypes true? party girls? How is their driving?

I need a frequent driver and am a bit nervous with their lack of driving experience...especially none in snow/ice.

Thoughts?
