Just phrase it like any other potential change in every host family's life - how has AP coped with #(DCs+1) kids before, has she worked with infants, is she/could/would she get infant certified, what is her experience in doing (whatever it is you'll want her to do for the theoretical baby), and anything else that will help you get a sense of her ability to cope with that. You'll also have clarified what your expectations would be if a baby arrived and she'll have the opportunity to express how she'd feel about that and whether it's something she could handle.

Well just thinking through the timing, but you do have to have an infant-qualified AP and she can't be alone with the baby anyway until it is at least three months old. So if you started TTC while you we're looking (a few months before her arrival I assume?) then even if you got pregnant right away, she wouldn't be looking after the baby herself unless she stayed a second year. So it seems like kind of a non-issue. I'd say when you get to the point where you're getting serious about a candidate, I would mention that you are not pregnant now but that you may be in the next year but that there wouldn't be a baby during her time with you so she wouldn't be affected at all. Good luck OP!

I have no AP experience, however I am a nanny who is currently working for a family that is TTC. When they interviewed me, with one toddler, they told me that they were hoping to "grow their family" but obviously had no idea of when that may happen. I was totally fine either way and told them so. I do have newborn experience so that wasn't an issue.

I would just mention that you are hoping to have a second at some point and that it may overlap with their employment with you. As for their experience, I would base it more on an overall fit with your family, if they needed some training perhaps you could do it during your maternity leave?

Good luck!

I'm not sure how to handle this: looking ahead we'll likely be TTC our second by the time we need to interview for another au pair (in another couple of months) We've loved our current one who was great with our son when he was an infant, but I'm not sure how/when/if to bring it up with prospective au pairs. Maybe I'm over thinking this, but I would want to get someone who is good with an infant, but depending on how things go, that may or may not be a reality during their stay here. (For reference, our current au pair extended for a full second year.) Obviously they would probably want to know the full extent of what they are getting themselves into...

I just don't know how to approach this. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice/perspective would be appreciated.
