You sleep when the children sleep, but would have to get up with them in the night if they woke up. Basically it means that you are on duty 24 hours on all the days you are working. Parents in these situations are frequently home, they just do not want to be the ones responsible for their children.

I am the other 24 hour nanny. I also live out while off duty. There are actually 4 full time nannies here in my job, so we work in teams of 2.
Most of the 24 hour jobs I've interviewed for have been live out on your time off, but I have seen others that provided housing all of time though. I think it really varies depending on what part of the country you are in. Quite frankly my job is crazy and I prefer to live out on my time off.

I'm the sad tired 24hr nanny who previously posted. I live out on weekends in my own manhattan apartment that I pay for. There is a nanny room with private bathroom next to kids room that the weekend nanny and I share when we are on duty. Providing my own expensive apartment SHOULD reflect in my salary (85k), but it doesn't. I am waiting to renegotiate my salary at the 1 year mark.
If I am giving up my life to raise other people's kids, it should be worth it financially. Now I know better, I think a 5 day 24 nanny should earn at the very least 100k.
It bothers me greatly that I see jobs posted at agencies or on Craigslist that are 45-60hrs for 80-95k. I much rather work those hours than over 110hrs a week.

It varies, it can depend on the space in the home. Some have you live-out when off, some have rooms for each nanny. Some will have a guest house and the "off" nanny stays there while the "on" nanny stays in a room in the main house. Sometimes you have to pay for your own separate apartment, sometimes the family will have one for you. Pay will reflect these different options.

I make $475/day, so about 100k per year. I also get health insurance and several other benefits. My employer has care 365 days a year, so I negotiated double time if scheduled on a major holiday.
In my experience most 24 hour jobs either pay a daily rate or a high enough annual salary to make it worth it for the nanny.
Unless you want to go through people you need to have more than one person if you want 24/7 coverage. I personally like the 4/3 split, but have seen other people do 5/2.

If your looking for a 24hour nanny 4-5days a week expect to pay between 80-150k a year depending on location, qualifications etc. you should have a separate private room and bath for the nanny and pay for all food while on duty.
Common benefits like sick/vacation/personal days, health insurance, nanny car are typical of this type of position. 24 hour nannies also get more then the standard 2weeks paid vacation because of the nature of there position.

How many days per week do you need 24-hour coverage? You might be best off thinking about two FT nannies - either 3 days/2days per week or day nanny vs. night nanny or weekday vs weekend nanny...We really need more information to help you here. Or you can call a local nanny agency in your area and get a basic rundown from them over the phone without having to make any commitment (I recommend this as they will have a better pulse of the costs in your area than we will).
