I think you need to emphasize "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" to all involved. Tell the kids that if they feel they can't be nice when they first wake up, that they should wait to start conversations until they've woken up more. And AP needs to be clear that silence does not equal rudeness. I personally am also a bear when I wake up, and if I try to really interact with someone I've found I'm snippy and rude. Best for both parties to hold off until they've had a chance to really wake up.
