Update-- I'm the OP, MB caught me kind of off guard today by telling me I can put a tank of gas per week on my work credit card. I hadn't even asked! They're the best thanks for your responses!

Do you have a contract? What was discussed when you knew in the beginning you would be using your own car for work?

I would sit down on your own and make a list of what you would like for a "raise" and think about the extra driving to and from and the addition of another child each day.

You have a right to ask for money for work driving and even for the additional child. If you are that close and can truly communicate well then they should be happy to work with you on what needs you have.

Those other people hopefully get paid a living wage, so they can actually afford to pay for their own living expenses.

There is no legal requirement to pay someone to drive on the job??!!
OMG!!
That sucks. I better look into that.
I always wondered if pizza delivery people get paid for mileage. Also, what about realtors?

LOL, yes go run off and look into that!

No realtors do not get paid mileage. Some jobs cover mileage on the job and others do not. Some jobs cover some mileage but have different restrictions.

The only legal requirements out there are for taxes, minimum wage, and OT with the exception that federal OT laws do not cover live ins (a few states do provide this for live ins). Nannies really need to realize that everything you want is not a legal requirement. You need to negotiate up front in your interview for what you want whether its PTO, mileage reimbursement, or cheese doodles on Thursdays. Nannies also need to realize that you can't assume that you will get something if you don't bring it up. The employer is not responsible for imagining everything they aren't offering that you may want or feel is standard according to your perspective. Bottom line ..if it isn't in the offer or contract don't expect to get it. Be smart and figure out what you want before you accept a job.

+ 1, especially the bold.

This is absolutely incorrect. The standard mileage rate is what a family is /allowed/ to reimburse you tax free. They can give you less or even more (with the overage taxes.) There is no requirement to reimburse you for mileage.

That said, its a very reasonable request for an additional benefit, but it should be approached the same way you ask for any other additional benefit.

OP, if you are driving ON-THE-JOB then you most definitely should receive gas/mileage compensation back. Driving the kids around not only uses up your fuel, it also adds extra wear + tear on your vehicle. It wears on your engine, tires, etc. You should keep a log of miles driven and be reimbursed the federal mileage amount.

However, if you are asking for gas to get to and from work, then you are out of line.
While I know some other nannies who actually get gas money from their employers, this is just a nice perk...not a necessity. Most jobs do not pay the employee for commuting to and from work.

Hope this helps.

OP, have a talk with the family. They should be giving you mileage reimbursement, so at least get that. Beyond that, though, if you have a good relationship, maybe they would be willing to help with gas. I am a MB and we love our child's nanny and would be miserable to move and risk not having her. If we were moving 40 minutes away, I don't know if my nanny would commute (and you should think hard about what that kind of commute will do to your quality of life), but if there were even a chance she would stay and all we had to do was arrange a stipend for gas each week to help her with the commute, we would happily do it to keep her. So your family may be willing to do the same. You are already doing them a great service by agreeing to the commute, and they may be more willing than you think to ease the burden on you for it!

You should definitely at least be compensated for gas and mileage while you drive the kids around. As for driving to work, that is your responsibility. Being with them for 2 years is wonderful but I would never consider commuting that far for a job. Really consider if you will still be happy in your job with that much driving.

The family I work for is moving about 45-50 mins from where they live now, and I live very close to them now. In the beginning of the job I commuted to them (for about 6 months) until I moved close to them. I have never been compensated for gas even though I use my own car and drive the kids all over the place. I have agreed to continue to nanny for them. My two year anniversary, when I should be receiving a raise, is in September. MB is also pregnant with the 3rd and is due in August. We havent discussed whether they were going to give me gas money now that I will be commuting 5 days a week (MB also says I can sleep over once a week if I want to). I've been thinking about asking them for some compensation for gas each week. The problem is--and I know everyone says to keep a professional relationship so things like this don't happen--we are very, very close, and I always feel awkward asking them for things. Even if they said no to the gas money, I'm still going to be their nanny. I love them like family and vice versa. I was thinking maybe I should just wait for my raise in September/when the baby comes. However, the gas money would be a huge help financially. I don't know how to bring it up or if I should. What would you do??
