My best friend left her kids in the car for a few moments. Someone called the cops and stood behind the car so she couldn't drive away. She is facing felony child neglect charges.

Don't do it.

That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard. The case will be dismissed. What a waste of DCFS's time and resources.

Who are you to say case will be dismissed?? LOLLLL
If she has a good lawyer she'll probably get charges reduced (to a misdemeanor for example) and enter AR program. If she has any history whatsoever she wont be able to get AR and will prob get some probation time maybe community service.... Either way, if she is hiring a good lawyer that's a good - at least- 2K just in retainer fees. Be smart ladies. Not only to protect your children but also to protect yourselves from facing these consequences.

With my own kid, I would probably do it, but not with someone else's kid. The liability is just too high.

Try to plan ahead from now on OP and get gas when you are not with the kiddos.

I hope so. She is hyper upset about it. They keep on bumping the court date.

Ughh, I feel for your friend. Honestly, GL to her. Obviously she shouldn't have done it but now she is in such a tremendous amount of trouble because of a little run in somewhere that caused nobody harm ( hypothetically could have). People get less in trouble for worse crimes than this!! GL

I feel like the children's safety and well being is my number one priority. I personally just pay at the pump but if for some reason I couldn't, I would just bring the kids in with me to pay. Sure it's inconvenient, but i don't want to leave their safety to chance. I love in Florida, it's very dangerous to leave a child in a car here because of the high temp. But even when I lived up north, my kids came in the store with me. You never know what could happen if you leave a child unattended.

Same. I also roll down the windows while I pump if its a 100 degree day. This isn't great because you have the fumes from the gas station but its better than the heat. I'm amazed at how hot it gets in a car so fast.

Every parent and nanny should turn off the car and sit in it with the windows rolled up on a hot day to experience how quickly this happens.

Exactly! If I can, I'll roll the windows down on the opposite side of the car from the pump. So the fumes aren't as strong.

I'm pretty laid back about leaving my 4yo out of direct contact in many situations. Restrooms, park, for example, if she's in sight she can be pretty far away. However, never in a car.
Biggest reasons I can think of: it gets hot in a car really quickly. People steal cars. Cars break. ( I was actually in a car at age 4 where the emergency brake failed and I rolled accross the street into another house. I still remember it.) Kids at some point will climb into front seat to pretend to drive (obviously not an infant issue!)

Also, you can get easily delayed or distracted when paying for gas. Cc doesn't go through, line is long.

Our contract states that our child is never to be left alone in the car for any period of time. Is there anything in your contract? I'm a mom of 4 so I know it's a hassle to get kids in & out of the car for short errands, but in general, no, I do not leave babies or toddlers in the car ever. I will leave my toddler in the car for a few minutes with my teenager or my 10-yr old, but I don't leave the little one alone even for 5 minutes. I'm sure nothing would happen in that short time but it just makes me uncomfortable.

So after seeing the post about the nanny leaving the child in the car for twenty minutes; I'm curious. How do you feel about leaving your charges in the car to (quickly) run in and pay for gas? My charges are babies, so it's hard to get them in an out quickly and I have wondered what other nannies do. I am a live out who drives my own vehicle and although I do my best to get gas before work so I don't have to leave the, occasionally I run and it is absolutely nessescary. Ive often wondered if leaving them (only for a span of 5 minutes maximum) is bad/could get me in trouble... So nannies what do you do? And mb's how would you WANT your nanny to do this
