No, I can honestly say that I have never scheduled a sitting job because my EXISTING plans MIGHT fall through. I have canceled last-minute several times when I was a) legitimately very ill and probably contagious, b) had to attend a funeral of someone who died unexpectedly, c) had relatives come into town unexpectedly (changed their flight at the last minute) and had to entertain them.
That's my entire list, and for the latter two, I found them a replacement sitter because I felt so badly about canceling. So no, this shitty behaviour isn't universal.
