I agree w/ 7:05 and the $12-15 gross. Be careful in that this board does not necessarily reflect the market and "going rates" accurately. There are definitely nannies, with experience, bilingual, legal, etc... out there that are not making $15/hr. (Right or wrong - not looking to start another rant about rates - but the fact is that the folks here are only a subset of the nanny pool.) So you don't want to lose jobs right off the bat by stating an hourly rate that appears silly to an employer.

Better to have a range you're comfortable in, a minimum you cannot afford to go below, a list of things employers could offer you (that you would value) if they aren't offering a higher rate, etc... You should go into the interviews w/ your total compensation package in mind (inclusive of vacation, holidays, health insurance reimbursement, transportation costs, work hours/conditions, etc...) so you can better negotiate. That gives you flexibility with employers and makes you appear professional and informed. It also means you're more likely to be happy w/ the offer you accept.

Good luck.

You're probably looking at $12-$15 gross, depending on your prior experience. Planning on being paid on the books?

Pp here: No one legal should accept $10/hour in this area.

The only exception might be if it were live in, one child, AFTER taxes (not that anyone should negotiate in net) and excellent benefits otherwise.

That would be a crazy low rate for this area and especially NW DC. Keep looking but don't expect the world.

$14-17. $15-16 is about the most I'd expect you to get at your first position though.

Nobody should pay $20/hour to a nanny with no nanny experience! That's crazy. Being older doesn't mean you deserve to come in making what those of us with experience and education do.

High school students make more than that doing occasional babysitting. The OP has experience working with children and sounds more than qualified for a nanny position. If I were her, I wouldn't work for less than $15 an hour.

She is bilingual and has, presumably, other kid-centric work experience along with pediatric first aid/cpr (and she could have other skills not listed here). Some parents would value that and might be willing to offer more (but I agree, to be marketable she should probably aim at $15/hr) - besides, we see here all the time how MBs say they prefer a novice nanny and NOT because they want to pay less (so, MBs, who's in the market for a new nanny? ready to put your money where your mouth is?).

You should always negotiate in gross pay, not net, so you need to find out what this is in gross/before taxes.

I agree with the other PPs who said "You are looking at $15 an hour for one infant or toddler since you don't have prior nannying experience. Some will tell you $12-14 but that's pretty low, depending on your age. If you are looking at a nanny share with two infants or toddlers, I would ask for $17-20 an hour" although if you have the right credentials (education, work history) and presentation you might be able to swing $17/hr.

This is right.

I agree that you should expect no more than $15/hour at least initially. If you like this job, I would counter their offer with $13/hour.

$10 after taxes? What's that before taxes? How many hours? I think that's really low to be honest but if you like the family and think its a good job, do whatever feels right.

Hello everybody,

I need some help with my salary rate. I am looking for nanny/babysitting position in Washington NW and around, but I don't know how much to charge because this is my first job as a nanny pay. Although I don't have experience as a paid nanny, I do have experience with kids and I have good references from volunteers jobs. I have a certificate in pediatric CPR/Firts Aid/AED from Red Cross, I have a clean background and I am bilingual but I don't have a driver license. I am mostly looking for 1 infant, 1 toddler or 2 toddlers. How much should I charge for each case?.

Thank you.
