I know one person who pled guilty to molesting a boy for 8 years - from the age of 5-13 - and not only was it a misdemeanor and he did not have to register as a sex offender, but he was able to get it expunged while he was being investigated for nearly killing his infant son.

PP you are so right about Maryland! We were looking to big a home recently and started checking the sex offender registry in the city we were planning to move to, out of curiosity we checked our own neighborhood, though I never expected to see anything because we have a high school, two middle schools, a Montessori and the saucers within a 2 mile radius. Low and behold it is crawling with sex offenders. They have no living restrictions for offenders WTF! There are so many kids walking home around here, mostly in groups but still. How is it okay!

OP: I just went through the same thing -- checked on-line public records of court cases in several states and found out nanny candidate had knowingly been driving on a suspended license, got caught and the license was revoked. I did confirm with the candidate that this was their record since all I had was a first/last name -- just can't have someone with that little regard driving my kids.

Op: thank you for being a conscientious parent and actually doing the foot work to check nannies out! It's refreshing to see. Thank ou also for pointing out families need to be sure they have the correct individual- those records can be VERY easy to be confused by- but they're a great tool.

You don't need an individuals consent to check PUBLIC records.

So by all means- check your future employers out!

Do you have to have their permission and do you give them permission to do a criminal and credit on you?

I live in MA and all you have to do is pay$25 to the state police to obtain a CORI on an employee. It will show everything from misdeamors to felony and sex offenders. You pay another $20 to the DMV and can obtain a full driving history. I don't understand why anyone uses these websites when you can get an accurate report directly from the police, just need the employee to sign a waiver.

I recently went through a nanny search using several well known websites. Firstly, the preliminary background check that is no additional cost when you are a member at one of these sites did not turn up a criminal charge that I found on my own. I am very glad that I used Maryland Judiciary Case Search (just google it and it will pop up). Ideally to do this, you should have the person's full name, address, and date of birth. One of my potential candidates had NUMEROUS cases that appeared to me to demonstrate a very negative pattern. One case was criminal (theft). I also found driving-related offenses: reckless endangerment and not having a minor in a seatbelt! One of her duties would have been to drive our child places. I am very glad that I took this step and I wanted to post about it to make others aware of this quick screening tool if they weren't already. It is free, just takes a few minutes, and the results come back immediately. Be aware that many of the cases do not include a DOB, so you want to be careful that you are looking at the right person. Middle name helps and address really helps with that. And, of course, you could confirm by obtaining for records through other channels.
