MB's need to take responsibility too and ALWAYS have some kind of back up care handy. It's not fair for the nanny to feel that kind of pressure.

[quote=] ...

sick days suck but they are what they are. Are you getting sick a lot though for your MB to be trying to applying more rules to it?

OP here: no. I've been sick 2 times in the past 14 months, most recently, last week (2 days) after looking after her sick child. I called her at 9:00 the night before to let her know I wouldn't make it. I was quite sick for almost 2 weeks (this is a part time position, so MB doesn't see me every day). I had tried to call out the week before, but ended up working two half days because she was adamant there was no one she could call and was really in a bind. I agree that we need better communication, but I'm not sure what she asked for is reasonable. Just wanting to see what others think so I/we can work out a better solution. I don't want to be unreasonable but I've never had an employer who had a problem with me calling in the morning if I was sick or making a big deal of not being able to work it out. Just trying to sort out a better way for next time...

totally ridiculous. that just makes no sense. We have no notice clause in our contract for the nanny. I prefer she call me 2 hrs before the start time to let me know (i.e. at 5 AM) but i recognize that's early and normally she calls at 6.

agree with this 100%: "I'm only sick enough to call out from work once or twice a year and its usually when I wake up in the middle of the night or in the morning sick as crap. "

Does your MB know 2 days in advanced when she will be sick enough to miss work?

+1

Totally unreasonable.

I only wish I had a magic ball to tell me when I'll be sick in 2 days. I'm pretty in tune with my body and when something is up, but still not usually more than 1 day notice unless I happen to get sick towards end of day Friday/early weekend.

I wouldn't sign an agreement that called for more than providing as much notice as possible and stating a preference for 24-48 hours. I can just see somebody being fired for not knowing they'll come down with a fast on set bug, food sickness or such 2 days from now!

I don't think it's reasonable, because I probably wind up at the doctor due to sickness about once every three years, whereas I probably get sick enough to need to miss work twice a year.

Unless an employer is providing health insurance, I do not think it's fair to demand a note from a doctor, and I've never heard of a pharmacist giving someone a note to provide to an employer.

I say, in mine, that "Nanny will attempt to give no less than 12 hours notice for sick leave, with the understanding that some bugs come on quite rapidly and this might not always be possible. If Nanny begins to feel sick, she will notify Employer immediately, ideally providing 24-48 hours notice whenever possible."

Hi All,

Just wondering what you think is reasonable notice for calling out sick....

My MB is asking for 24-48 hours notice and for me to have an estimate (preferably from a doctor or pharmacist) of what I have and how long I will be gone for before I call. Is this reasonable, or what would be reasonable? I do recognize that it is difficult to arrange back-up care on short notice, but I'm not sure if this is a fair request.

Do most of you know the morning before if you will be sick the next day or 2 days later?
