An employer cannot TELL you to do anything. If an employer demands that you come in while violently ill, being fired from said job would be a godsend! I don't call out often, but when I do it's never phrased as a maybe, sort of, option to my employers. I tell them I'm not feeling well, and will not be coming to work.

It's very common for an employer to fire an employee who doesn't come into work, after being implicitly told to do so.
Actually, it happens quite often. Many employers don't take kindly, to out right defiance like that.

But that was part of my point- OP did NOT choose to stay home. She CHOSE to go to work instead of insisting she could not come in.

Yes, let's always remember to count our blessings for the fine families who respect and appreciate our hard work with their children. I love them!

That's horrible. I'm so sorry OP. Posts like these make me realize how lucky I am to have such an awesome MB.

Any parent with a full time or even part time nanny NEED to have backup care. You should not have to deal with that OP, I'm so sorry.

I really understand both sides. I've had horribly craptastic bosses sometimes where they threaten to fire you if you walk out, and they don't care if you claim your nanny is sick and you need to go take care of your children. If she gets fired, you get fired OP. Maybe she genuinely couldn't find a neighbor or anyone to relieve you and it took her 5 hours to wrap things up at work enough to come home.

OP, I can't help but notice that you did not refuse to go to work. Why? Probably because you were scared of losing your job if you disobeyed your boss. Well, rich people who can hire nannies and have high-paying jobs also have bosses who can fire them.

Just another Mommy Dearest -who loves her children so very much.
I am sorry she did this to you. Every parent must has back-up care. It was extremely irresponsible of those parents.
I hope you can finally get some much needed rest.

I called MB this morning at 5:30 am telling her I felt very ill. She told me that she HAD to go to work today, their was an important meeting and that she'd leave as soon as she could. I'm upset, but feel bad because it was sort of last minute. I arrive at work at 7:30 and by 9 I'm vomiting nonstop with horrible diarrhea to boot. I call her as soon as I can, tell her I am too sick to take care of the children. She says she's in the middle of the meeting but should be home within an hour or two. I'm seriously miserable, I can't do anything with the children because I can't leave the bathroom for more than 15 minutes. I turn on the a movie, and get some juice and grabbers for the 2 and 4-year-old. I have a 9-month-old charge, and she is literally in a bouncer in the bathroom with me. I gave her my phone just to keep her occupied, and luckily everyone was cooperative. I'm so sick I just lay down on the bathroom floor, waiting for the next round. I text MB, saying that I REALLY need her to find someone, that I am not well enough to do ANYTHING. She texts back 45 minutes later telling me that she's trying to see if the neighbors will come, then she calls and says she is about to leave. I'm at the point where I'm not puking nonstop, and I call her and tell her I seriously need her now. That it's an emergency and that I am physically NOT ABLE to watch her children, she was obviously irritated and told me she was on her way. It's almost 1pm at this point, around 1:45 she comes in tells me I can go, but that I'll need to stay late tomorrow because she now has to stay late at work tomorrow? What the hell? Seriously, who treats people like this? If she doesn't care about me, that's fine, but now her children are exposed and I told her numerous times I was to ill to watch them, and she still takes almost 5 hours to come home?

Am I the only one who finds this just not right?
