Do your research. Technology is not for little kids. It's for their Lazy care givers.

I'm a nanny and my mother is an elementary teacher and guess what? She's the one who told me about a lot of these types of educational sites. They're by no means the only educational things I do with my charges, but they are a tool I use frequently.

Personally I don't really get the fear of technology when it comes to kids. It's fine when we as adults want to use it to make our lives easier, but we can't use it to help teach our kids?

OP, where are you in this? What do you want your nanny and your mother to be doing?

If you want to put limits on screen time and buy some more books, do that.

If your want your mom to butt out, tell her.

I'd never pay a person to put my child in front of the idiot box.

OP your mom is right that using videos instead of more tactile materials is not a good approach. Interactive screens and multimedia is great for elementary,middle school and high school age kids. Especially when they can manipulate the input and use it in a self paced manner. Its not the best medium for younger children because their brains are not developed enough to balance out the fast distractions of the moving images. They will learn and absorb more from tactile touch and feel materials. They learn patterns and language from singing but will have more feedback singing the song without watching it on youtube at the same time.

If you are paying top dollar for a nanny to educate your child then you don't have the right person. If you are paying a normal amount for someone who means well and is otherwise great with your child from a play and patience standpoint then I wouldn't worry about it.

I am the PP who said this ^^. Also, if your nanny really were lazy then she wouldn't be doing these activities with your children at all. She certainly wouldn't be taking child development classes.

I would say that she is better than most in that she reads about child development, takes classes, and has an interest in being a teacher to your child. Would it be better if she taught your child these things without the use of internet and videos? In my personal opinion, yes. But if I were you I definitely wouldn't mention anything to her about it (you would come across as ungrateful for the things that she does). Perhaps your mother is just outdated on things??

I think in this day and age we need a bit of technology or media.
Not all the time -your nanny should do both - say the media alphabet and than a creative game, craft, project etc to tie them together.
How old is your child? This also makes a difference

Creating a curriculum is difficult without having taken a class or working in a school with support from other teachers. You did not hire a teacher and I'm assuming you do not pay her a teachers salary, so your mother's opinion is mute. Your nanny has more daily responsibilities then a teacher regarding daily care, so keep that in mind. If your mother is so concerned why doesn't she give your nanny some advice?

Your nanny could be more creative but she prob has no experience in doing this. You can buy a basic curriculum book from BN that has a ton of ideas and ask her to go through it and do one or more a day. She will eventually create her own projects as she gets used to it. Or you can ask her to take a curriculum course at a community college and pay for it.

Our beloved young energetic nanny, has taken some child developmental courses. She's not majoring in it, but she is taking courses in it and reads about child development as well. My mother is a teachers currently teaches elementary. My mother being nosy did ask what exacty or how my nanny teaches our daughter things. I think my mom might mean well, but sometimes she's too overbearing and critical. I mentioned how my nanny showed DD songs on YouTube, the Alphabet song. Also showed DD an educational site for learning colors. She does practice this without the need of media. But my mother felt if she was a truly good nanny, she would be creative on her own and would for example make cut out shapes of letters or come up with creative ways to teach my child without the need of media. She does work on colors with media. My mother jut frowns she had to enlist help from a YouTube alphabet song to get DD's interest and has her watch videos of colors as well. My mother things nanny is not really qualified or she's just lazy. I think nanny is doing fine but I do know of a friend's nanny that can teach things to her charge by being creative about numbers/letters/colors. So is there anything wrong with how my nanny is teaching my child, is she lazy or is my mother just too rigid and doesn't appreciate different ways of learning? Serious input please.
