You are right, there are severe cases of the flu in almost every state except the west coast. I just saw that on the news last night.

I am reconsidering getting a flu shot since they said that the one being given out is actually a good match against this bad strain that is going around.

One kid just died the day after Christmas, since he got the flu then pneumonia, and then a staph infection which just did him in. They had a pic of him looking fine on Christmas, then dead the next day...

OP here. I went to my doctor and was tested for the flu with a nose swab. The results were ready within minutes. The flu is all over in case you don't know how to read a newspaper or watch the news. I didn't know I had the flu because my symptoms were not the typical cough and runny nose.

I have literally been sick for the last 3 weeks straight. I ended up finding out I had the flu a week before Christmas and then found out I had bronchitis two days after Christmas. Both families that I work for didn't want me coming in when I had the flu (understandably so as they didn't want anyone getting sick with the holidays) so I had the whole week off before Christmas and the week of Christmas off.

I can't believe that their are parent's that expect their nanny to come in no matter what. That is crazy to me. In EVERY position that I have had, I have always had at least 5 sick/personal days to use and have never had an issue with a parent getting mad or making me feel like I HAD to go in sick.

How do you know you have the flu, OP?

Simply being lethargic and having an elevated temperature are not signs of the flu.

No way. MB here. I would not expect my nanny to come in unless she had been fever-free for 24 hours. In fact, I would be upset if she knowingly exposed the kids to the flu.

Flu is no joke and is highly contagious. Preventing its spread is important.

+1 And no I don't get any paid sick days. I also get crap on the rare occasion I take an unpaid one. The 1 sick day I took was because my MB had stayed home the previous week and I got it from her. So to answer OP's question, my MB would be pissed if I even suggested a 24 hour rule.

If your nanny got the flu, when would it be reasonable for her to come back to work? Would you want her to come in once she is 24 hours fever free, or when all symptoms have subsided?

FWIW, I did get a flu shot and still got the flu. The children had to of been exposed to the flu since I had worked this week. I feel terrible for exposing the entire family but had no idea I was sick because I had no cough or sore throat. The only warning sign I had was being lethargic and an elevated temperature. I am the kind of person who goes to work no matter what, but if I had known it was the flu I absolutely would have called out sick instead of exposing others to this terrible virus.

Is it reasonable for me to work on Monday? I don't know how long this flu lasts but from what I've read on DCUM some people have said it lasted 7-10 days and I cannot afford to miss that much work.

Any advice or suggestions appreciated.
